Going Fishing – Beloved Women – August 19, 2019
"I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing." – John 21:3 NIV
After Jesus' resurrection, Peter went fishing as he was used to doing before following Jesus. Other disciples followed his lead. All the events of the previous weeks probably were weighing on their souls. They were not sure what the future held. Then Jesus appears and calls out to them. From the shore, He tells them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. Unaware of who this person was, they obeyed anyway and caught a significant amount of fish.
I find it interesting that the disciples listened to this voice to throw their nets on the other side of the boat. I think they were ready to give up and go home, but they tried anyway. I would have thought the man was crazy and ignored him. Many times, God calls us to action even when life feels overwhelming. If you feel like giving up, hear Jesus’ call to give it one more try.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for calling me out of the pit of despair. Help me to stay focused on the road ahead. Help me not to give up and return to my old ways, but trust fully in you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Can we respond in faith to God's direction even at the low point in our lives?
