TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

"Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete." -  James 1:4

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Every time I read the list of the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians, patience is the fruit that makes my eye do a little twitch, simply because I know it’s the one I consistently struggle with the most. All it takes to expose my hurried nature is getting stuck behind a driver going under the speed limit. Maybe you can relate to my fleshly desire to get where I’m going quickly. In tonight’s scripture, we see the word perseverance. Google defines perseverance as “persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” There it is - delay. In James 1:4, James makes it clear that God is using slow seasons to purify our faith, making us mature and complete believers.

A pure and strong faith is the exact opposite outcome in the story of the Golden Calf in Exodus 32. While Moses was on Mount Sinai meeting with God, the Israelites grew impatient and came up with their own plan to guide them in the wilderness. In Exodus 32:1, we see that the plan didn’t include waiting on the living God.

“When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, ‘Come, make us gods who will go before us.’”

Delay exposed the condition of their hearts, and it can do the same for us. They were more concerned with quickly getting to their destination, the Promised Land, than being with God on the way. In the waiting, the people looked to something else to get them where they wanted to go. Their impatience led to idolatry and resulted in grave consequences for that generation. We face similar decisions today. We can choose to trust God to guide us, even when He takes longer than expected, knowing that the fruit of perseverance is a harvest of strength and maturity in our lives. In fact, James later writes in 1:12 that perseverance doesn’t just impact us now, but we are rewarded with a victor’s crown in heaven.

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”

Our slow seasons of waiting have Kingdom purpose. God is with us in the delay. We can trust that the God who leads us will not only bring us to our destination but also purify our character along the way.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Father,
I thank you for the slow seasons of life. I praise You that there is purpose in the waiting. You have a plan in delays to make me stronger, so that, as James writes, I am mature and complete, lacking in nothing. Forgive me, Lord, when I grow impatient, for the moments when I rush ahead instead of trusting in Your perfect timing. Grow me, Lord, in perseverance and patience so that I may be used in Your Kingdom to bring glory to Your name! In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

  1. What slow or painful situation am I in right now where the Lord is calling me to persevere in order to purify my faith?
  2. What am I tempted to look to for guidance and stability instead of waiting on God, and what does it reveal about who I trust?
  3. In seasons of waiting, am I more focused on reaching the destination or growing in a relationship with Jesus on the journey?
