Go Back to the Beginning – Beloved Women – May 15, 2019
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” - Proverbs 1:7 ESV
Technology has made information so accessible that we often mistake knowledge for wisdom. If we’re not careful, the instant gratification of quick man-made solutions found on web pages, feeds and apps can deceive us into exalting worldly opinions over God’s truth. We may not say this with our words, but perhaps we practice it in deed.
I confess there are times I find myself pulling out my phone before I kneel in prayer or open my Bible. When was the last time you first consulted with God in prayer or the scriptures for guidance concerning your life?
Unlike the content we consume online that quickly becomes obsolete and outdated, God’s wisdom is timeless and applicable to all people and cultures. When you need discernment, remember that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Rather than consulting what’s new and shiny, let’s be people who regularly go back to the beginning – people whose decisions reflect our reverence for our holy God.
Dear God, thank you so much for the timeless wisdom I find in your word. It’s the scriptures that teach me how to live holy lives that please you. Please keep me from falling into the trap of seeking worldly counsel before I consult you. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
