When a Woman Knows Her Worth – Beloved Women - January 3, 2019
When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 15 She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. - Judges 1: 14-15 ESV
Ancient Israel was a society in which women had limited power. For example, Caleb’s daughter, Achsah, was given to her cousin, Othniel, in marriage as a conqueror’s reward. The scripture doesn’t indicate what prompted her to ask, but she went to Caleb, her father, and asked for a land with springs. She specifically said “give me also,” and Caleb gave her the upper and nether springs. Achsah probably knew of the promise of land to Caleb and his descendants. In spite of the limits within her culture, she confidently made this request of her father.
There was nothing wrong with asking; so she asked and got what she requested and then some. It would seem that the Bible celebrates her “pushiness” since this story is recorded again in Joshua 15:16-19. You too can boldly ask your Heavenly Father to “give me also.” His response may exceed your expectations.
Lord, I know you made me in your image. Please help me to remember my worth in light of your creation and may it emboldened me to ask for what is available to me. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen.
