7 Prayers for the Brand-New Momma

You are amazing! Just thought you might need to hear that right about now. You made it. You did it! Your love made that precious little bundle you have tucked so close to your heart, gifting you a title you never knew could come with so many emotional strings attached.

Yet, here you are! You are a mom. A mom! You anticipated, waited, and earnestly prayed for this day, this new chapter. So, welcome to the club, sweet sister!

It wasn’t easy, I know. Your body is weary, and your heart is still tender. It’s been quite a lot to endure lately. After all, you just carried a life inside of you for nine months and grew another tiny human. You did that! You dealt with mood swings and food aversions, watched your body morph in ways that brought forth both joy and frustration. You battled sleepless nights and wrestled a body pillow that practically kicked your hubby out of bed. You walked around even though you couldn’t see your feet, all while bracing yourself for lots and lots of (un)wanted advice. You prepped like never before, cleaning like a mad woman all while eating cereal like it was going out of style. You fought fatigue like a champ and read all the parenting books.

You did all that, and now you are here! Holding this little human with shaky arms, unsure of how in the world you are going to do this. But, this is indeed motherhood.

Sweet new momma, it’s okay to have all the feels and to be real and raw in the moment. You just underwent the most incredible yet physically, mentally, and emotionally draining procedure that a woman could ever go through. Sure, it was exhaustive, demanding, and intense, but oh, so beautiful.

Yet, as surreal as that moment in time was, the journey has just begun! The healing will come, I promise. The emotions will eventually even out, I assure you. The fog will lift, and you will settle into this new role. Those motherly instincts will kick in and you will be okay. Trust that you are not only capable but so much stronger than you may think because God created you for this. And, He’s got you!

In the meantime, as you snuggle that precious gift and settle into this new season of your life, take some time to get quiet before the Lord and let Him wrap you in His unfailing love. Below are some verses and pocket prayers to whisper up at any time. Let them bring peace and comfort to your new momma heart:

1. A Prayer for Healing

"Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise." Jeremiah 17:14

Thank you, God, for the precious gift of this child, and for entrusting him/her in my care. You have graciously provided a safe labor and delivery and I am so very blessed. As the Great Physician, I ask that You continue to place Your healing hand upon my entire little family. Help me remember to also take time to care for my own needs. Grant me the wisdom to ask for help when needed. Amen.

2. A Prayer for Bonding

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him." Psalm 127:3

Oh, I am so grateful that You are our loving Father. You show us the meaning of unconditional and sacrificial love. As a new mom, I ask that You consume me in Your love so that I am able to bond with my baby in a special way. As I navigate all the joys and challenges that motherhood brings, allow me to rest in You and take comfort in the bond I have as Your daughter. I love you! Amen.

3. A Prayer for Patience

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Romans 12:12

O Lord, please grant me a way to have patience with myself and with my baby as we are both learning how to navigate each new experience - together. Grant me the grace to handle the stress, endless demands, and overwhelming needs my body must endure with love and patience. I realize that can only come for You. So, I humbly submit to You and say that I need You, Lord. Amen.

4. A Prayer for Strength

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength." Philippian 4:13

Faithful Father, I need Your strength today. Please sustain me through these long days and sleepless nights. You tell me that I can do all things through You, so I welcome You into every part of my day. I seek Your face and love, for You are my fortress and rock, my source of refuge, and I take comfort in that when I grow weak and weary. Your strength allows me to preserve, and I am so thankful. Amen.

5. A Prayer for Wisdom

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." James 1:5

Gracious God, as I embark on this new journey into parenting, I desperately need your wisdom and discernment. Show me areas in which I need to grow and rely on You. Grant me permission to fail and make mistakes and then boldly reach to You for Your unfailing mercy and grace. I want to be the best mom I can be for this precious gift You so graciously gave me. Please help me grow into the mom You are calling me to be. Amen.

6. A Prayer for Rest

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

Lord, I am tired. You know this full well. But, being the good Father that You are, I also know that You value rest and actually model that for us in Your Word (Genesis 2:2-3). You also tell us to come to You when we are weary, so here I am, vulnerably seeking rest for my exhausted body and soul. Please grant ways for my body, mind, and soul to find a calmness and peace that only You can provide. Thank you, sincerely. Amen.

7. A Prayer for Grace

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me." 2 Corinthians 12:9

Jesus, I love you and thank you for the endless amount of abundant grace which freely flows. If I am being completely honest, I desperately need Your grace today. Between the lack of sleep, not really eating, nor taking care of myself the way I should, it all just piled up… and I broke. I failed as a mom. I keep beating myself up about it, so I am laying this heavy burden and hurt at Your feet today. Please forgive me. I need your grace and to be reminded that it is enough and sufficient. Thank you for Your provision and protection over my little family. Please keep us in Your loving care. Amen.

Oh, sweet new momma, take some of these Scriptures and prayers and place them around your home where you will see them and be reminded of the love the Lord has for You. You’re doing a great job!
