10 Prayers to Pray Together as a Family During the Pandemic

Meg Bucher

Praying the promises of God reminds us of the hope we have in Jesus Christ. During pandemic times, keeping our hearts and minds focused on the truth of God’s word eases our anxiety and fear. Our God is purposeful, setting us in our families, communities, even in our generations. We are not meant to do life alone. Private prayer is important, but so too is prayer together as a family. God promises, where two or more are gathered, He is with us. When we seek Him with all of our hearts, we will find Him. May the following prayers remind us of God’s love for us, and comfort us in times of distress.

1. A Prayer to Remember God’s Faithfulness

Father,

You are sovereign, not surprised by pandemics. Isaiah 41:10 says, “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (ESV). We pray this truth over our lives, today, Father, knowing “every good gift and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17 ESV)We believe we are experiencing Your blessing, even in the midst of many unknowns this day and in the days ahead. Jesus, our Savior, we know we do not travel through these days alone. You promise to be with us, always. So today, we take moment to focus on who You are, rather than all that is happening around us. We know You are close to the brokenhearted, the Living God living in every believer. Your promises are good, and we can trust in Your providence, even amidst pandemic. You are faithful. You are good.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

2. A Prayer for a Miraculous Healing of COVID-19

Father,

When Your people were exiled to Babylon, You offered these words of hope through the prophet Jeremiah: “For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 30:17a ESV). You promised to restore and heal them. Your promises comfort our hearts, today, Father, as we pray for a miraculous healing of COVID-19. We are reminded by Jeremiah’s prophecies Your ways are good and You love us compassionately and faithfully. The apostle Luke recorded Jesus’ words, “And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (Luke 11:9-10 ESV). Father, today we pray for a miraculous healing of COVID-19. We pray for a cure, and the stop of its spread. Heal those who have COVID-19, and protect those who have been exposed to it from contracting the illness. Father, we pray for a healing only You are capable of. We know You hear us, and we know Your ways are good.

3. A Prayer for God's Protection

Father,

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (ESV). Please protect us from the pandemic, Father. Protect the surfaces we touch and shield us from the airborne germs that threaten to expose us. Guard our lungs, God. Help us to be patient as we obey wise orders to social distance.

Protect those of us, and members of our family and community, that still report to work each day, risking their exposure, and the continued spread of the virus. Remind us of Your promise in Isaiah, “For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Fear not, I am the one who helps you’” (Isaiah 41:13 ESV). When we fear, let us bring our fears straight to You, Father. All of our worries about the unknown, we can lay down at Your feet. Moment by moment, day by day, protect us, Father: body, mind, and soul.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

4. A Prayer of Gratitude

Father,

Even though our daily life has changed and the world is suffering all around us, we know You have not changed. You are good, and You make good of all things. Jesus told us, in this world, we will have trouble, but You also promise: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalms 147:3 ESV). Today, we come to You with the things we are grateful for, because You say it is good for us. We are thankful for each other, for the breath to live another day. Thank You for Jesus, and His sacrifice on the cross to forgive our sins. Thank You for the new life that is still coming forth with Spring, Father.

Flowers are blooming, and nature is coming alive again. These things remind us of Your care and goodness. “It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8 ESV). Thank You for Your faithfulness, and for our blessings. Even amidst the pandemic and all that has changed, You have not, and will not.

Amen

5. A Prayer for God to Give us What We Need for Each Day

Father,

You are good, and You are faithful to provide for us. The apostle Paul wrote,“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 ESV). In Christ, we are never alone. We can trust You to give us what we need for each day. Father, help us to remember this when we are tempted to worry about what will happen tomorrow, or the next day. You tell us not to worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow carries enough worry of it’s own. And you remind us of how you take care of the birds and the flowers, and that we are more precious to You than they.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9 ESV). Help us to remember these words when we worry about running out of what we need.

6. A Prayer for Comfort

Father,

You are our Comforter. Our hope is found in Jesus. We are never alone, fully forgiven and welcomed into the Kingdom of God through His sacrifice on the cross. The apostle Paul wrote, “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9 ESV). He endured many hard times, but knew He was never alone in any of them. As we face pandemic in our community, country, and world, so much seems uncertain, and many are pain. Isaiah 40:31 says, “but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faith” (ESV). We hold onto this and Your other promises to remind us that in our weakness, You are strong, Lord.

Amen

7. A Prayer for Community

Father,

All praise and glory to You for faithfully going before us and preparing a way for us to remain connected to our communities, even amidst quarantine. Bless our community, Father. May anyone who is having a hard time connecting to others receive phone calls, letters, face-time calls and video group chats from people who care about them. We are placed in each others’ lives purposefully, Father. Help us to keep finding creative ways to keep in contact with one another, to keep caring for each other. Isaiah 33:2 says, “O LORD, be gracious to us; we wait for you. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble” (ESV). Father, You are faithful to provide all we need. Feed our communities, equip us and give us the courage and faithfulness to keep running this race, even amidst pandemic.

Amen

8. A Prayer for Those on the Frontlines

Father,

We are not all sitting at home during this pandemic. Many are fighting COVID-19 on the front lines. Healthcare workers, first responders, grocery and delivery people, and other essential workers are doing their part. Protect them, Father. Be their shield of defense from COVID-19. When protective supplies run low and run out, be the mask that protects each breath they breathe and everything they touch.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (ESV). You are the God of miracles, and we pray You give these frontline workers miraculous protection, Father. “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength” (Isaiah 40:29 ESV). Strengthen them, give them the courage they need to do their jobs well, and bless them and their families and friends awaiting their return each day.

Amen

9. A Prayer for Friends and Family Members

Father,

Many of us miss our friends, and some of us are missing family members we are separated from during this pandemic. Let us remember Your promise, “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgement. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD.” (Isaiah 54:17 ESV) Encourage our hearts, Father, when we are sad and missing our family and friends. Give us, and them, strength and hope in Jesus. We need each other, Father. Let us find creative ways to keep in touch and let our friends and family know we love them and miss them. The apostle Paul wrote, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV). Yes, Lord Jesus, guard our hearts, and those of the family and friends we love and are missing right now.

Amen

10. A Prayer for God's Will

Father,

You promise us, “The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” (Exodus 14:14 ESV). We all have jobs to do for the Kingdom of God. Help us to know what to do during this pandemic. Guide and direct us to the ways in which we can help, and how we can pray, specifically. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (ESV).  You will fight for us. You have a purpose for us. Help us to remember how important it is for us to trust You, God, especially in these uncertain and scary times of pandemic. May we recall and live this truth:“Trust in the LORD with all of your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV). Let us hold onto the hope we have in Jesus, Father.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
