Peace That Anchors Busy Days
Your Nightly Prayer
By Angie Grant
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” - Colossians 3:15
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Are you overwhelmed in today’s noisy world? This kind of background noise causes anxiety and unsettles your heart. It fills quiet moments, steals rest, and makes even small decisions heavy. Colossians 3:15 teaches us that peace isn't something we manufacture, but something we receive when we surrender and trust. What a relief!
Life rarely slows as we hope it will, with constant responsibilities and concerns. We often think peace comes with less busyness, but perhaps true peace is found in Jesus' presence, not in perfect calm. I’m not sure a completely unbusy life is obtainable, but a life surrendered absolutely is. A surrendered life means waking up and saying, “Lord, I choose to walk in Your peace. I choose to trust instead of control. I believe you are near when all feels loud.” This is a posture of the heart. Even after we drift, we can always return.
Because we will drift. Our hearts begin to wander into worry. Our thoughts begin to spiral into all our 'what ifs.' Our emotions rise and fall with circumstances. Yet Jesus doesn’t condemn us. When we drift, He gently leads us back. He often uses something simple—a moment of gratitude, a whispered truth, or a still pause- to remind us of who He is. Gratitude recenters us. It shifts our focus from the uncertain to the unchanging. Gratitude softens the noise and creates space for peace to return.
I was reminded of this recently in the sweetest way. Recently, I rocked one of my grandchildren to sleep. I held him close and sang softly. His body relaxed, his breathing slowed, and he drifted into rest. I thought he was asleep, so I stopped singing. In the quiet, he whispered, “Lolli… sing it again.” My heart melted in that moment. I thought—this must be how our Heavenly Father delights in us. He doesn’t need to hear from us again, but He loves our nearness. He invites, 'Come back to Me. Tell me again. Sit with me longer. Let Me steady your heart.' He is not rushed. He is not distracted. He is not overwhelmed by our repetition or our need. He welcomes it.
Peace is not managed like a schedule or achieved by perfect conditions. We receive it each time we sit with Him, listen, and lean into His presence. A child finds rest in a loving voice. Our souls find rest when we return to Him. We must pause long enough to hear Him and let His truth quiet everything else. If your heart or mind feels noisy or tired, simply return to Him. Let His peace settle over you and let gratitude lead. Peace is received, not chased. Aren’t you thankful for that?
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Jesus,
Thank you for steadying my heart. For reminding me that peace is not something I must chase, but something to rest in. May your presence gently guide my heart toward gratitude and thankfulness. We are your delight! Teach me daily to sit in your presence and listen to your voice, which guides and leads me to your side. Thank you for quieting my heart, and may I rest in your truth.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
- Have I made peace something to chase after or rest in?
- Where have I drifted?
- Have I practiced gratitude as a daily rhythm? If not, how can I practically do that?
