TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God." - Romans 8:26-27

SOMETHING TO PONDER

A strong prayer life can be difficult. Between the kids, work, and everything going on in our lives. Cooking meals, keeping up the house. You’re already up early, and by the time the day ends, you fall into bed exhausted, or simply turn on the TV and watch like a zombie. Let’s face it, life is busy and can feel like a train wreck. Sometimes it actually is a train wreck – filled with pain and chaos, and you don’t know how to get out of it.

Oh sure, you still pray – when something goes wrong, or you need help with something. Often – too often – your prayers are formal and meaningless. Empty. But let’s be real – we both know that isn’t what a good prayer life is all about.

Don’t think you know how to pray? Sit down alone and tell God that. Tell Him about your challenges, tell Him what is hurting your heart. And tell Him about your joys. Thank him for opening your heart to him, and opening your eyes to your spiritual drift, and saving you from it. Tell him you need Him in your life. More than that, you need Him to lead you. That you want nothing more – and nothing less – than to be in His will, not your own. And if this isn’t what you want, ask Him to help you want it.

If you pursue Him with your whole heart, you will find Him. Nothing – and I do mean nothing – will keep God from pursuing you. You are His beloved child, and His love for you is everlasting.  But maybe take a few minutes away from social media, television, or wherever it is you spend your downtime. Trust me, it will be worth it.

Ask Him to help you trust. Ask these things every day. Every. Single. Day.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Father in heaven,
You already know that I have been struggling to come to you in prayer. You already know that I am desperate and don’t even have the words to speak to you now. Please touch my heart. Please let me feel your presence and your forgiveness once more. Please let your Holy Spirit lead me on level ground. I desire your will in my life. This I pray in the mighty name of Jesus.
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. When you start each day, take a few moments – a few minutes – and sit down alone with God. Open up to Him. And then listen.

2. Ask God each morning to give you wisdom (James 1:5) and to let His Holy Spirit lead you on level ground. (Psalm 143:10)

3. As you get breaks in your day, like waiting in line or sitting in traffic, take a moment to thank the Father.
