I READ A STORY ABOUT A WOMAN WHO WAS DEPRESSED

You may have heard this one. She went to her pastor, hoping to receive weekly counseling and said, “Pastor, I’m so depressed! I have no energy. I feel horrible. I’m sad. I can’t stop crying. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I feel like I have a disease. It’s so strong. The doctors say nothing is physically wrong with me. He says I’m depressed and he gave me a prescription for an antidepressant.”

“Are you suicidal?” the pastor asked.

“No. I don’t believe in suicide. It would be an insult to God, if I killed myself,” she replied.

“Oh, good. I’m so glad you feel that way. How can I help you?” He asked softly.

“Can you help me get rid of this depression?” she asked.

“Yes. Betty, I know that you make amazing brownies! I want you to go to the store, buy brownie supplies, and go home and make them for someone!” He said.

“For who?” she asked.

“It doesn’t matter. Just do it,” he replied.

She didn’t come to her scheduled counseling session the next week. The pastor saw her a few weeks later after service…

“Betty, where have you been?” he asked. “I’ve been concerned.”

“Oh, sorry, Pastor,” she replied. “I’ve been making brownies for everyone! Once I got outside myself and started serving others, I forgot about my depression.”

Now, I am not minimizing depression, and I am not telling you to get off medication. Don’t read what is not here. I am encouraging you, however, that no matter who you are or what you are going through, think past and serve past yourself today. I guarantee you that you will be encouraged.
