"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." - John 14:27 NIV

Peace is a rare and treasured commodity we all yearn for, especially in our homes. We turn on our televisions and hear about wars on the news, and we hear about another divorce through social media or on the grapevine at work. Many families have severed relationships, not speaking to one another for many years. Is it possible to live in peace with one another in a time when conflict grows exponentially?

Peace is not a one-way street, because it requires all parties to make an effort to have a serene household. Through the years, I have learned that I cannot create peace, nor can I control another person’s behavior, but I am responsible for how I respond to the words and actions of loved ones. We can try to avoid people who disrupt our tranquility at work or the grocery store, but we don’t want to avoid our family living under our own roofs.

How can we be the peacemakers in our homes? How can we exemplify the characteristics of our heavenly Father and be blessed as peacemakers? How do we handle the rumblings that come from a stressed-out husband or a teenager who had a difficult day at school?

As always, we look to the Word of God for answers and find a wealth of wisdom about peace and the family.

One requirement for a calm home is a foundation based on Christian values.  True peace comes from a right relationship with God. Look at today’s verse, where Jesus promises to give us peace. Each family member must trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  Sometimes, that doesn’t happen, and we may feel like the only spiritually minded person within the household.

Even if we are the only person who desires peace and believes in God for the peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7), we can experience God’s peace within our hearts through prayer and Bible study. When everything in our homes seems out of order, we can still take a quiet moment to turn to God.  We can believe the promise of Jesus Christ in today’s verse, and we can turn to Him when our hearts become troubled and fear rears its ugly head.

Our homes should not be places where we feel like we are walking on eggshells. Whatever trouble comes our way, Jesus will calm our hearts with His peace, not the world's.

I have prayed for peace to rule our home. I have anointed the doors and windows. I have prayed Scriptures throughout the house. I’ve even told the devil to get out. Those prayers give me confidence, based on the promises of Christ.

Let’s look at some ways we can create a more peaceful atmosphere in our homes. When conflict arises, we should try to resolve it quickly. Tensions run high until we are willing to forgive as Christ has forgiven us.  The writer of Ephesians reminds us that we can be angry, but we should not let the sun go down on our anger (Ephesians 4:26 ESV).

I have also found that biting my tongue is better than allowing hurtful words to roll out that I can never take back. Sometimes, I walk away and say a prayer.  God instructs husbands and wives about how to love and respect one another in Ephesians 5:22-27. Those Scriptures help me immensely.

Some practical steps toward an unruffled household can include family dinners, family altar, and other quality family events. Date nights without the kids are great for couples. It’s been said that reduced clutter, calming colors, and pleasant scents also contribute to a peaceful atmosphere. When God is the focus of our family, and love rules our homes, peace will follow. We can’t control what happens outside our doors, but we know the One who is in control of it all.

How do you plan to cultivate peace in your home? What is one thing you can do tonight to ensure a peaceful dinner? How can you lean into God more for the tranquil home you desire?

Let's pray ...

Heavenly Father,
Help me be the peacemaker in our home. Forbid any conflicts from following my people home today. Spread peace in all our hearts, in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
