The Death of “What If”

Café Menu for Friday, February 6, 2015

Today’s Special is: Overcoming Fear

Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Katie Harmon

Main Ingredient:

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 KJV

Entrée:

We’ve all been there – lying in bed trying to fall asleep... and failing. Too many thoughts are running through your head. Things you did yesterday, things you’ll have to do tomorrow, things you wish you had or hadn’t said. But then your thoughts turn to the future.

Sure, your life is okay right now. You’re happy, but what if…? What if that great opportunity isn’t as great as you thought? What if you lose your job, your health or a loved one? What if it all comes crashing down? And what if your faith isn’t strong enough to handle it? Suddenly, it is two hours later and sleep is nowhere in sight.

Some people call it worry or anxiety, but let’s call it what it is – fear. We have an innate fear of the unknown. A fear that all too often cripples us and prevents us from taking chances, taking risks, taking hold of all the good God has in store for us.

Truly, that is all He wants for any of us. He wants the betterment of our souls; and if we believe that, then what have we to fear? If we trust Him, then we know that even the bad times, even the heartache, even the loss “work together for good,” even if we aren’t exactly sure what that good is.

Fear can’t prevent heartache, but it can cause it. God wants us to grow, not to be comfortable and not to play it safe just because we’re scared.

So let’s put an end to the “what if’s.” Sure we might be scared, but we can take courage in knowing that our God is bigger than the “what ifs’.” He asks us to walk by faith and not by sight. We can’t see the future, but we don’t need to. We know who holds it.

Take Out:

Take some time today to talk to your Father about your fears. Tell Him your “what if’s,” then spend a little time in His Word and let Him whisper peace into your soul.

Dessert:

Father, forgive us. Forgive us for not trusting You. Forgive us for forgetting how very well taken care of we are. Remind us when we forget and grow our faith everyday. Amen.
