
As someone who struggles with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), I am no stranger to being caught in an anxious cycle of overthinking. I tend to overthink everything. “Do my friends actually like me?” “Is my writing any good?” “Am I wasting my life?” All these questions bombard my head every single day, and I spiral into overthinking.
You may also be caught in an anxious cycle of overthinking and be desperate for a way out. The good news is that we don’t have to stay in this anxious prison forever. Jesus can help you break out of this cycle and give you lasting peace.
Whenever you are caught in a frenzy of anxious thoughts, turn to Him in prayer. Reflect on what He says in the Bible and hold His promises close to your heart. You might feel alone at times and without help, but it is important to remember that God is always with you. He will be with you when the times are good and when the times are challenging. Other people in our lives might leave, but He never will (Hebrews 13:5-6).
Here are 5 Bible verses to help when you are caught in an anxious cycle of overthinking. Reflect on these passages when anxiety strikes and allow the comfort of God’s Word to give you peace.
1. 1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
The Apostle Peter tells us to cast our anxiety on Jesus, because He cares for us. These are weighty words that we don’t need to overlook. No matter what is causing us anxiety, we need to give it over to the Lord. Once we can calm down our anxious thoughts, we will be able to stop the cycle of overthinking. By getting to the root of the problem, we will be able to prevent ourselves from spiraling.
Think about what is causing you to overthink. Is it anxiety about a person or a specific circumstance? Try to figure out the genesis of your anxiety and overthinking. Once you can figure this out, you will be able to bring these specific concerns to the Lord. Prayers can be vague, but it is better if they are specific. If they are specific, you will be able to see more clearly how the Lord has answered them.
Rather than continuing in an anxious cycle of overthinking, give these concerns over to the Lord. As humans, we tend to want to control every circumstance, yet this is unreasonable. We must choose to trust God, give our anxieties over to Him, and rest in His peace. His thoughts and ways are higher than our own, and we can have faith in Him to bring relief to all our troubles (Isaiah 55:8-9).
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Paul tells us many beautiful truths within Philippians 4:6-7. By following his teachings, we can break free from the anxious cycle of overthinking. Prayer helps us to know that God hears our concerns, worries, and troubles. Every request that is brought to God with thanksgiving will be blessed with the peace that surpasses all understanding. This peace is from God, and it will never diminish.
This passage has been a game-changer for me. Whenever anxiety starts rising in my heart, I reflect on Philippians 4:6-7. With thanksgiving, I present my requests before God and go to Him in prayer. I pour out my heart to Him and tell Him everything that is on my mind. His peace washes over me, and my heart is kept safe.
You won’t feel as anxious anymore when you choose to give the problem over to the Lord. Going to God in prayer is the best thing you can do when you are feeling anxious. Instead of spiraling into a cycle of overthinking, you can stop your anxious thoughts in their tracks by praying to Christ. He has a way of extinguishing all fear and anxiety in our hearts. Trust Him with your anxiety today and allow Him to bring His peace into your heart, mind, body, and soul.
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7).
Another Bible verse to help when you are in an anxious cycle of overthinking is 2 Timothy 1:7. From this passage, we learn that the Spirit God has given us does make us timid or afraid. Instead, the Spirit gives us power, love, and self-discipline. With this truth in mind, we need to remember that the Holy Spirit lives inside us. From the moment we place faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit permanently indwells us, and He will never leave. Since He lives inside us, we need to remember we are never alone in our anxious thoughts, and He can give us relief.
The Holy Spirit is not afraid of anything. If we look at anxiety, we see that it is normally rooted in fear. However, when we turn to the Holy Spirit, we see He gives us power, love, and self-discipline. Fear is nowhere to be found in the Spirit’s nature. This is why we need to rely on Him and lean on His strength. He will equip us with bravery, courage, and endurance to face any situation.
It will take time, but the Holy Spirit can help us to embrace the love, power, and self-discipline He has given us. We cannot fully grasp these beautiful gifts apart from trusting Him and giving Him control. Once we have surrendered to Him, we will see power show up as strength in our lives, love helps us to love as Jesus loves, and self-discipline helps us to turn away from the sinful flesh.
4. John 16:33
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
While we live on this earth, we will continue to have trouble, but Jesus has overcome the world. Since this is true, there is no room for anxiety, fear, or overthinking. Anxiety will try to creep into our minds and send us into a bout of overthinking, but we must stop anxiety in its tracks.
Anxiety is not our god—Jesus is. Each day, we need to choose to believe what Jesus says rather than what anxiety or overthinking is trying to tell us. Anxiety and overthinking are liars, and we do not need to give them the time of day. Focusing on what God says will be more beneficial to our overall well-being.
Additionally, relying on the truth of the Bible rather than our own thoughts will help us break the anxious cycle of overthinking. Each time you are tempted to spiral into overthinking, stop yourself and say, “Jesus has overcome the world.” Take a deep breath and choose to face the day, knowing that the Lord reigns from Heaven.
“For, ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16).
There is no reason for us to remain in the anxious cycle of overthinking because we have the mind of Christ. Having the mind of Christ means we have His peace. As Jesus is never anxious or overthinks, we need to be at peace and be still. Things can become hectic, but we don’t need to spiral into overthinking.
Overthinking causes us to doubt the Lord. Jesus has been good to us and blessed us in many ways; therefore, there is no reason to doubt Him. Doubting Him leads to feeding into the lies and worries in our heads.
Choose to cultivate what God has already given you—the mind of Christ. Sharpen your mind by studying the truth of the Bible, reflecting upon it, and applying it to your life. It doesn’t do us any good to study the Bible yet fail to apply its teachings in our lives. Actively incorporating the teachings of the Bible will ensure peace reigns in our minds.
When we start reflecting on Jesus rather than our worries, our worries will become pale in comparison to Him. Choose to start fostering the mind of Christ in your life today. He will give you peace and comfort from anxious thoughts. With time, as you manage your anxious thoughts and overthinking, your quality of life will truly improve. Instead of living in a prison of fear, you will be walking in the freedom of the Lord.
