iBelieve editor Kelly Givens talked with Justin and Trisha Davis about their new book, Beyond Ordinary: When A Good Marriage Just Isn’t Good Enough. Here’s a short clip from their conversation, as well as a brief overview of the book. It’s definitely a must-read!
When I sat down with Justin and Trisha Davis’ book, Beyond Ordinary: When A Good Marriage Just Isn’t Good Enough, I didn’t know anything about them. I didn’t know their back story, hadn’t heard of the couple or their ministry, RefineUs. So I wasn’t quite prepared for the story I held in my hands.
I read Beyond Ordinary over the course of only a few days; I couldn’t put it down. The book is Justin and Trisha’s (very) personal story, from the beginning- and almost the end- of their marriage. It is about what happens to marriage when it becomes “ordinary”—when dissatisfaction and dullness creep in. Ordinary is what lead to Trisha’s misplaced expectations, it’s what lead to Justin’s affair.
Although their marriage was almost unraveled, through faith in God and faith in what they believe marriage truly should be, Justin and Trisha have rebuilt their marriage into an extraordinary one- one where Jesus is at the center and working in big ways.
Before you learn more about Justin and Trisha’s marriage, think about your own. Would you describe it as ordinary? Maybe you’d use another descriptor- challenging, or maybe comfortable? Boring, hard work, stressful? Disconnected? Dead?
No matter what you think about marriage now, it’s probably not what you were thinking the day you said “I do.”
We yearn for more in our marriages because marriage is meant to be more than it often is. We were meant to have extraordinary marriages, not ordinary ones. The Davis’ invite us into the intimate details of their lives in order to catch a vision for the extraordinary plan and purpose God has for your marriage.
The Davis’ have generously provided the first chapter on Beyond Ordinary for free, which you can download here, or, you can buy the book on Amazon. Also, be sure to check out their website, Refineus.org.
