A Prayer When You Feel Forgotten in a Waiting Season | Your Daily Prayer
Alisha Headley shares her personal experience with infertility, five pregnancy losses, and IVF while reflecting on Isaiah 49:15–16. This devotional offers biblical encouragement for people struggling with unanswered prayers, comparison, grief, and the loneliness of waiting, reminding readers that God's faithfulness is not measured by how quickly their circumstances change.
What Does Isaiah 49:15–16 Mean?
Isaiah 49:15–16 uses the image of a mother's love to communicate God's enduring commitment to His people.
God asks whether a mother could forget her nursing child. Even if that happened, He declares that He will not forget His people.
The image of being engraved on the palms of His hands emphasizes remembrance and covenant faithfulness.
In its original context, this promise responds to Zion's fear that the Lord has forsaken her.
Christians can draw comfort from the passage as a revelation of God's faithful character, while recognizing its original setting in God's promises to His people.
Does God Forget About Us When Our Prayers Go Unanswered?
An unanswered prayer is not evidence that God has forgotten someone.
Scripture includes many accounts of people who experienced prolonged suffering, uncertainty, or silence while continuing to seek God.
The Psalms even give believers language for asking why God seems distant.
Faith does not require pretending those feelings don't exist.
It allows us to bring them honestly before Him.
How Do You Trust God During a Long Waiting Season?
Trusting God during a long waiting season can involve:
Bringing your disappointment honestly to Him
Remembering what Scripture teaches about His character
Resisting the urge to measure your worth against someone else's circumstances
Seeking emotional and practical support
Making room for grief
Continuing to live meaningfully in the present
Holding your hopes with openness about the outcome
Trust doesn't mean knowing how the story will end.
It means seeking God even when you don't.
Is It Wrong to Feel Jealous When Other People's Prayers Are Answered?
Feeling sadness when someone else receives something you've deeply longed for does not automatically mean you're ungrateful or lacking faith.
You may genuinely celebrate another person's joy while grieving your own disappointment.
Those emotions can coexist.
The important question is how you respond to them—with honesty, compassion, and a willingness to bring your pain to God.
Does God's Timing Mean Every Prayer Will Eventually Be Answered the Way We Want?
No.
Christians believe God hears prayer and acts according to His wisdom, but Scripture does not promise that every desired outcome will occur later if we wait long enough.
For those facing infertility, illness, broken relationships, or other painful circumstances, it's important not to equate God's faithfulness with receiving one particular answer.
God's love is not conditional on a changed circumstance.
What Can I Pray When I Feel Forgotten?
You can begin with a simple prayer:
Father, I feel forgotten, but I want to trust Your love. Help me bring my disappointment to You honestly. Remind me that my worth does not depend on receiving the answer I long for. Give me strength for today and hope that remains rooted in You. Amen.
