One of my favorite things to do when I get up in the morning is to grab a cup of coffee, sit just for a few minutes, and look outside from these large windows in our house. I love sunny days, but sometimes it is so calming to look outside when it is raining. Especially with the spring rain, I love that it brings so much life after it falls. It reminds me that nicer weather is on the way, and everything will soon be green.
There is something about the rain that, when you stop and think about it for a minute, shows how much we can gain from it as a metaphor for our faith. It is a good way to take something complicated and challenging to make sense of and bringing it to a place we can understand. It gives deeper meaning to the everyday things of life.
Rain can bring a beautiful picture of what it looks like to experience different things in our faith.

1. Rain Reminds Us of New Beginnings
I love this time of year because everything is full of new life. The grass grows, the trees get their leaves, the birds are back, and so many other signs that spring is upon us. Something about spring gives us hope that we, too, can have a fresh start. It can remind us of what we have in Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! We are given a new beginning through Christ when we repent and accept Him as our Lord and savior!"
Just like the rain provides a fresh start for everything in the spring, Jesus does the same for us. He has taken our sin upon himself and made us a new creation. Every day can be a fresh start if we know how. I am so grateful for the fresh start that he has given me; I would be lost without him.

2. Spring Rain Cleanses Everything
One of the most beautiful things about rain is how it cleans everything up. Where I live, winter can be hard on everything, and when the snow melts, things look dirty and lifeless. After the first couple of times it rains, it is incredible how it cleans things up. Dirt and the mess from winter are all washed away. Spring rain washing everything clean reminds me of how Jesus did the same thing for us.
If we know Jesus, our sins have been washed away, and we are cleansed.
1 John 1:7 says, "But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another. And the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin."
Our lives, which were once stained by sin, have been washed clean. We can present ourselves to him and approach him freely now. Nothing is keeping us from him, nothing we have done in the past or that we will do in the future. He sees us as pure white like snow when it freshly falls to the ground. We are not what we once were.

3. The Rain Is a Source for Growth
The rain is essential for things outside to grow. If there is a lack of rain, things struggle to grow and survive. When it does come, the beauty of creation emerges. Spring rains also help everything outside thrive and stay healthy, and it is needed continuously. Like the rain is necessary for growth, it is the same for us needing to stay connected to Jesus if we want to grow. Jesus is the source of everything we need.
John 1:4 states, "In Him was life, and that life was the light of men."
We must stay connected to him to grow in our faith journey. This can be done by spending time with him daily, reading the Bible, praying, and being involved in a church community. Relying on the power of the Holy Spirit is also essential if we want to grow. I think of it as doing life with Jesus by acknowledging that he is always with me, and asking for his help throughout the day. It helps me stay connected to him, and I see much more growth when I do. The more I get to know Jesus, the more time I want to spend with him because I have seen what he has done in my life. If you want to grow, stay connected to Jesus, for he is the source of life for all things.

4. After It Rains, the Sun Does Come Out
Spring rain is usually a welcome sight, but if there are multiple days in a row when we don’t see the sun, we begin to miss it. The longer the sun is gone, the more we long to see it. We might think the rainy days won’t end, but eventually, the sun does come out. Even though it is hard, we might have benefited from what we have gone through. There is always a silver lining.
I find the same thing is true in our walk with Jesus. We aren’t guaranteed that life will be easy here on earth. Sometimes the rain will come, we will go through hard things, and we might not see an ending for a while. Just like with spring rains, the sun eventually comes out with time. There will be an end to our pain, suffering, and hardships. We know this is true because Jesus told us that he will come and make all things right one day. This is our hope, even if our lives don’t go how we thought they would.
If we allow Jesus to use these hard times to help us grow, we will see fruit come from it. When the rain is done and the sun does come out, we will see the growth that has been accomplished in us. We might be amazed at what he has done in our lives through it. Yes, it was hard, but he used it for good.
The spring rain is refreshing and makes us think about everything Jesus does for us. It can be hard to put into words what everything means for us, but I am thankful that we have creation to look at and that we can imagine how that compares to or relates to all that he is. I’m not sure how we would understand and relate to him otherwise. Yet he comes down to our level and gives us these beautiful pictures of our relationship with him. The best part, though, is that no words can ever describe who Jesus entirely is. When we meet him one day, I think we will stand in awe of how great he is, and we won’t have anything to compare him to. There is nothing that comes even close.
When you experience those spring rains, take a second and meditate on all the things that Jesus is for us, and how great he is. It may not explain him entirely, but it gives us a good picture so we can understand who he is. Remember that he gives us a fresh start, cleanses us, and is our source for growth. Eventually, he will make all things right. Jesus is our refreshing spring rain.
