“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves.” (1 Peter 3:3-5)
This passage speaks to every woman, regardless of background, age, or circumstances. The words the Apostle Peter wrote are a reminder that we have a God who searches and knows our hearts. And as believers, we want Him to be pleased with what He finds. God creates every woman with specific talents and abilities, as well as unique personalities. More importantly, within each woman’s heart, He plants a seed of faith and a deep need for Him. If we respond by inviting The Lord into our lives, He renews and shapes us.
This process truly brings out the best in us. But it doesn’t happen instantly. Becoming a godly woman is a lifelong journey - and we have an active part to play. It starts by learning more about what having this inner beauty looks like, and how we can live it out in our own lives.
Scripture reveals that God has always valued women. In 2 Corinthians 6:18, the Apostle Paul echoes a promise God spoke centuries before.
“‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’”
Eve, the first woman God made, was brought to life with the holy purpose of reflecting His character to the world.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
Later, Immanuel - “God with us” - came to Earth, showing respect and inclusiveness toward women that confirmed their preciousness in God’s eyes. Jesus considered Martha and Mary of Bethesda as close friends. He took the time for the woman at the well (John 4:7-26), to bless the one who reached for His robe (Matthew 15:28), and to acknowledge Mary, who anointed His feet with oil (Luke 7:44-50).
Throughout the Bible, our Heavenly Father has provided insights about how His daughters can fulfill their original purpose. In fact, the Apostles’ letters in the New Testament contain practical advice for displaying Godliness in daily life.
“I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” (1 Timothy 2:9-10)
“...that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind…” (Titus 2:4)
Living for the Lord starts with humility, recognizing His all-surpassing greatness, and admitting our “small-ness” in comparison. It is His power that changes us, not our own strength. Next, we must submit ourselves to God, letting Him be the ruler of our lives. If we ask, our Heavenly Father will lead us into Christlikeness.
Godly women are committed to working with Him to develop good and righteous qualities. The Bible has a number of passages that list these traits. The Lord has actually planted them within us already, with the expectation that they will mature over time. One of those sections is known as The Fruit of the Spirit, found in the book of Galatians. Just reading the verses can set us on the path toward growth.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
One of the biggest parts of our role as Godly women is to represent the Lord to others. What we do and say, as well as how we spend our time and energy, can actually point people to Him. Maybe the most famous portion of Scripture regarding women is Proverbs 31:12-32. Though written about a wife and mother, the verses can help all women learn how to represent God well in our “sphere of influence” and beyond.
Building others up.
This principle applies to all our relationships. Being supportive and encouraging has such a positive impact on how others feel, and allows God’s love to shine through us.
Seeking to honor God by where and how we work.
We all have different jobs and items on our daily to-do lists. Approaching our work with focus and excellence sets a higher standard, and displays some of God’s creativity to our co-workers.
Carrying ourselves with God’s grace.
Scripture gives many cautions about using our words and actions well. Learning how to listen before we speak, and responding with good judgment, gives others a glimpse of God’s discernment.
Giving care to our families and others.
Meeting the needs of our loved ones is a basic call for us. Reaching beyond into the community or even around the world when we can shows God’s goodness in action.
Knowing our worth comes from God.
We need to keep a sense of how much God treasures us tucked into our hearts. Living with the knowledge that we are forgiven and fully loved by Him makes us more effective in ministry, and shares the joy we have in The Lord.
We need to keep the Lord first in our life.
Above all else, we are to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord. Setting aside time for worship and prayer helps equip us to do His Will. Staying God-centered reminds those around us of His presence.
Through some of the women portrayed in the Bible, we can find more traits that set apart those who pursue living in a way that honors God.
Confidence in God.
Honesty with God about our struggles and cares
Example: Hannah
One of the wives of a loving husband, Hannah had been tormented for years by the fact that she was barren. She poured out her heart before God in the temple, lifting up prayers for a child. Even when Eli the priest didn’t understand her, Hannah humbly sought the Lord’s comfort.
“In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life...So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.” (1 Samuel 19:10-11,20)
Faithfulness to follow God
Trust in God.
Passion to serve God.
Heavenly Father,
How wonderful to be called Your daughter! Seeing myself that way changes how I look at myself, and how I want to live my life. Please develop those qualities that will help me to look more like You. I give You permission to weed out any traits that are keeping me in a more “worldly” condition, and less than You call me to. I pray that I will reflect Your truth and light to others as I go through each day. I know I will never reach perfection here, but I want to continue growing.

Being a Godly woman will look a little different for each one of us. But this quote from speaker and author Susan Hunt gives a simple yet powerful description of the journey we are all invited to take with the Lord. “When a woman is absorbed with God’s glory, she will interpret her life according to His Truth.”
