When Darkness Feels Loud
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5).
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Have you ever been so sad that just getting out of bed was a chore? I was in high school the first time I felt it. Creeping under the covers, taunting me to throw the blankets over my head and just stay in bed. Things would never get better. I'd always feel this way. I'd never find love. Might sound a bit extreme, but that's how my broken heart made me feel.
After 4 years of pining away over my crush, the plug was pulled, and the lifeline went dead. Not only did I lose a friend, but I lost someone I thought would be in my life forever. The more my thoughts raged, the louder the darkness felt. It wasn't just around me. It felt like it was within me.
About 2 days later, my mom pulled me out of bed and told me to put on my best outfit. She "forced" me to go to town with her for "errands." About an hour later, I was laughing in TJ Maxx, crying at the movies, and hugging my mom tightly. Because she chose to sit with me in my pain. But she also refused to allow me to stay there.
In life, I've experienced nights that never seem to break. Days when you force yourself to stay awake just to feel something. While I think we all just want the pain, or heartache, or darkness to end, what we really need is someone to be with us in that place. And that's what John 1:5 points to:
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (NIV).
What I love most about this passage of Scripture is that it doesn't deny the darkness. It's very real and present. God knew we'd face hardship this side of Heaven. But it doesn't allow us to stay in this place forever. Yes, your darkness is real. Yes, it's okay to mourn, grieve, and take time to process. But also, remember that the Light of the world is within you. He loves you. And no matter how dark this night grows, the darkness can never overcome us because of His Light within us.
Knowing this fact doesn't make facing terrible times any easier. There are days I'm still depressed, anxious, and too weary to get out of bed. But you know what? I force myself to get up anyway. Because the Devil would want nothing more than for us to give up. Evil will fight, but so does the Light within us. Remember: Christ's light always overcomes the darkness. The darkness can threaten to swallow us whole. Yet when we cling to the Light, it never stands a chance.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Jesus,
Right now, I'm struggling to see the light. I know you're with me, but you feel nowhere to be found. When I am afraid, help me to put my trust in you. The darkness may exist this side of Heaven, but in the end, it doesn't win. You are our eternal light, and you will fight for me. I love, praise, and thank you, Jesus. Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. Turn off all the lights in a room and light a candle. Sit in the stillness as you reflect on John 1:15.
2. Read and memorize John 1:5. When darkness feels loud and overwhelming, call this Scripture to mind. As you do, picture a candle being lit in a dark room. Remember that God's presence is within you, even when you can't feel or sense His nearness.
3. How would you define darkness from light? Journal these definitions and draw a picture to illustrate.
