Godly Wisdom (No Special Sunglasses Required)
By Jessica Brodie

“For, ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:16

When I was younger, I had “magic” glasses with sky-blue lenses. All I had to do was slip them on and the world would be instantly transformed! A dull day would become Technicolor bright, while a sunny day would turn soft and hazy, like I’d entered some sort of fairyland.

I made the mistake of wearing those sunglasses in the ocean, and a wave swept them away. I never could replace them. New blue glasses turned the world an odd, depressing tint. Yellow lenses made everything look bizarrely mustard-hued. I tried describing this to others, but I just got weird looks. Eventually I gave up.

Yet every now and then, if the twilight is that right shade of purple, or the dawn just golden enough that the rosy sky feels like sunset, I’m catapulted back to those magical blue glasses once again. I remember what it felt like to look through those lenses and see such beauty and clarity.

Perhaps that’s what the apostle Paul was referring to when he wrote about Godly wisdom to the early Christians of Corinth. He explained the wisdom of the Gospel goes beyond the kind regular humans can see or imagine—beyond street and book smarts, beyond words, beyond even rational human understanding. It’s super-powered, extraordinary, mind-blowing—and it’s all from God.

Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot possibly comprehend the things of God. But when we become believers, the Holy Spirit flows freely into us, and we’re able to understand—and see. It’s like getting special God-prescription glasses. Instead of regular vision, we get a God’s-eye view, and it’s better than anything we can imagine.

Who can know God’s mind? Only God. But thanks to Christ, who lives within us courtesy of the Holy Spirit, we get a glimpse. And that glimpse far surpasses what my magnificent sky-blue sunglasses provided.
