THE MOUNTAIN TOP

About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lighting. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to Him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.”) Luke 9:28-33

I love Peter because I see so much of myself in him. Don’t we all want to stay on the mountain top? Growth, however, occurs in the valley. There is work to do in the valley; there are people who are waiting to hear the good news in the valley. People need to hear the good news in the valley. If we endure hardship, and then finally arrive and the mountain top and decide to stay there, the chronicles of our faith goes unheard by those who need to hear it the most.

I used to pray and dream and hope to arrive at a nice, quiet mountain top.  A dream of mine is to build a cabin and write in it a lot! While I still dream of having such a cabin one day, I realize that if I stay there too long, there won’t be anything to write about. I encourage you to spend time reading Luke, Chapter 9 in your quiet time.

May we celebrate and rest for a moment on the mountain tops on which God bring us. Then, let us joyfully and passionately return to the valleys in order that we will continue to grow while encouraging those around us.

Let us also unite and celebrate the freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America because of the sacrifice of our soldiers.  Many soldiers have scaled mountains, reclaimed mountains, and died on mountains in order that we may live in freedom.

There’s Strong. Then There’s God-Strong!
