“Jesus said, ‘I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from Me.”
John 14: 6
“Truth” – Fidelity to an original or standard. Integrity.
How would I define the word, “truth?”
“Pilate asked, ‘Quid est Veritas?’ (‘What is truth?’) In Latin the answer is an anagram, ‘Est Vir qui Adest’ (‘It is the Man who is before you.’)
“But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the Truth.”
John 16: 13
“Christ is the key which unlocks the golden doors into the temple of divine truth.”
In our contemporary world, saying just about anything to get to your goal seems to be alright. Even when it means trying to destroy another’s character by leaving a false impression you know full well is untrue.
What saddens me most is that I’ve seen some so-called Christians resort to some very nasty techniques in their quest to get what they want, too. And some have flat-out said to me, “But right will triumph in the end. This is why I’m doing what I’m doing right now.”
Well, if there was anyone who ever put the notion to rest that the end justifies the means it was Jesus. For He was not just a Man of Truth – He is the Truth. We must never look any further than the example of His life to find a lighthouse to guide us off the rocky shores we often traverse in our lives.
From Pilate in Jesus’ time to Sedulius Scolus in the ninth century through to the 21st century, this question about truth has been raised: “I wonder what is truth?”
This is why I am so thankful that Jesus was so clear to Thomas: “I am Truth” (John 14:6).
Having a focal point, an anchor, a rock, a guiding light that is Truth gives me a point of reference to return to whenever things around me seem to be moving, readjusting and shifting.
Recently, Jim and I were driving by an area of beach along the California coastline. We are fond of this stretch of highway and the beach around it for this is where, when we were young, we went on a picnic with a group of kids and realized how much we had in common. It was a place where a 34 year friendship began that continues to this day.
As we drove along the shore, we noticed that during the past 30+ years, huge amounts of sand on the beach have washed away. It was hard to even find the place where we had our picnic – except for one landmark, a huge rock, unchanged by time and the elements.
The Truth – as shown in the life of Jesus – is like that rock. Jesus’ life of truth, honesty, and integrity is a rock, an example from which I can base the decisions of my life. Any attempt to adjust my standards to changing times or shifting values, rationalizing myself into believing that somehow the ends do justify the means leaves my soul vacant.
The missionary, Albert Schweitzer wrote, “The most important quality in a person connected with religion is absolute devotion to the truth.” In the words of Jesus – the Man whose footsteps we follow – “I am the way, I am the Truth.”
guide us with Your boundless compassion
and compel us with Your perfect love
to love according to Your will
in the truth
that the truth may live in us
and we in the truth.”
“Lord, give us weak eyes for things which are of
no account and clear eyes for all Your truth.”
“Almighty God who has sent the Spirit of truth unto us to guide us into all truth: so rule our lives by Thy power that we may be truthful in thought and word and deed. May no fear or hope ever make us false in act or speech; cast out from us whatsoever loveth or maketh a lie, and bring us all into the perfect freedom of Thy truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
