A Prayer to Overcome Fear with Faith

“The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” - Psalm 118:6 NLT

I still remember the day I was so afraid I wouldn’t make it home again. I was probably 13 years old when I was stranded at the end of an island. I got off at the wrong port, and everyone left except for me. I kept a brave face, believing my aunt would be just around the corner, but when the sun began to set, my bravery turned into fear very quickly. I've always been a shy person and very introverted, but with a lot of independence. I had to exercise my faith in God that night and get a ride with someone I didn't know. And guess what, although it was a dangerous thing to do, God rewarded my faith in him, and I arrived safely at my destination.
Fear will always be a constant in our lives; it will never go away. What we need to do as believers is use fear as fuel to exercise our faith. Knowing that God is for me gives me confidence to trust fully in Him. I can boldly serve him by doing what he has called me to do, even if I'm shaking with fear. There is a quote I've heard quite often that goes, “Do it scared.” What has God called you to do? What is the area in your life that fear has crippled? Many times, our fears are rooted in what others think about us. This is how it is for so many of us. Other times, it comes from things we cannot control. I like to think of the God that we serve during times of fear because he is on our side and will always be on our side. He knows our limitations and has ordained our path ahead of time.
So why allow fear to keep you from doing what you have to do? Use it as a stepping stone as you build your faith in Jesus. For those who are afraid of what people say or perceive, what matters in the end is only what God believes about you. What can people do to you? They can talk, mock, and even kill you, but nothing can separate us from God. And what matters is hearing “well done, good and faithful servant” from the one who loves us more than anyone else ever can. I've realized as I continue to grow and mature that fear will always be with me, but I won't know what God wants me to know or do what he wants me to do unless I step out in faith and trust in God. To have faith is to do what God has called us to, even when we're unsure and can't see the outcome of his plan. We can overcome fear with faith if we trust in the Lord to lead the way. We already know his thoughts toward us are good, and all he asks is for us to have faith as tiny as a mustard seed.
Let’s Pray:
Dear Heavenly Father,
I humbly bow before your presence, oh Lord. You are my God and my Savior, and I place all my trust in you. I realize that fear is always going to be present in my life, but help me to put my faith in you above the fear I may feel. Help me to do what I have to do, scared, for your honor and glory. I commit myself to you and ask you to increase my faith. Oh, Lord, I know asking for an increase in faith would give me opportunities to have my faith tested. I have a reason to have faith in you because you have promised to be with me always. You are for me, Lord.
Thank you for being for me. It doesn't matter what my flesh says, or what other people say, I will place my trust completely in you. Let me serve you with bold faith! May I allow you to be Lord over my life and my fears. Help me to put my trust in you even when I can't see where I am going or what you are doing. I know this is not the case of the blind leading the blind because you know the beginning from the end. And even if I have to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you will be with me. You will be steadfast, and your unfailing love will be my comfort as I place my faith in you.
Thank you for being with me and for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
