He Heals the Brokenhearted

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 (NIV)

I believe the power of connection brings healing to the broken places in our stories. I’ve experienced it firsthand.

Like many of us, I entered adulthood with a fractured heart and childhood wounds I was trying to outrun. I carried an invisible armor of self-protection — an instinctive defense fiercely guarding my most tender places. But running while weighed down by armor is no path to peace.

As the Lord began revealing the fragments, I started to see that even in my running and rejecting, He was pursuing my heart.

A friend once asked me to define “healthy relational connection.” Her question surprised me. No one had ever asked me for a definition.

For most of my career, I’d focused on helping children and families heal from trauma. While the root of the word “trauma” is “wound,” connection originates with ties that bind. What I learned is this: Connection is what heals wounds.

Jesus, a man of sorrows, pursues connection with us to bind up our wounds, as Psalm 147:3 says: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

As I prayed and pondered how to define “healthy relational connection” for my friend, I landed here: It is to be seen, heard, valued, and known.

For children who’ve experienced trauma, like the ones I was serving, their souls are wounded. That was my story too. When I first began learning how children heal from painful histories, the Lord gently held up a mirror to reflect my own fragmented heart.

What about you? Do you have wounds — old or new — that need a divine touch?

God reminded me that connection is for all of us. In the mirror’s reflection, He showed me how self-protection had called in reinforcements — an army shielding my deepest parts out of fear of being hurt again. And yet, even then, He had been pursuing connection with me all along.

He had seen it all. Heard every cry. Loved me to the grave and back. He knew every secret, every tear, every pain. And in that moment, I saw the Father’s heart.

As we experience the connection we are created for — being seen, heard, valued, and known by God — the most broken places in our stories begin to heal.

He is El Roi, the God who sees (Genesis 16:13).
He hears every sigh, every plea, every unspoken request.
He knows every desire, every sin, every sorrow.

Out of His deep longing for communion with us, He brings the connective ties to bind wounds and dry tears. This is what He continues to do … for me and you.

Instead of hiding, I dropped the armor. And I’m learning to surrender every part.

The Lord seeks us when we are lost because His love for us is so vast it cannot be contained. How high, how deep, how long, and how wide is the love He has for us (Ephesians 3:18-19)? Nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38-39).

Let Him in today to bind up your broken places.

God, thank You for continually pursuing me despite my messes — even the ones I create. Shine Your light into the buried places where I need Your healing touch. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
