What He Left Behind
Jaime Wyrtzen Lauze´

So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. Mark 16:19 (ESV)

Heaven is known by its perfection. And its perfection is because God, Himself, is the source of its light and purity. Jesus left all of that behind for us when He was born on this earth.

I often think about the crushing heartbreak that the followers must have felt when Jesus ascended into Heaven. The love of their life was leaving them. He would send the Holy Spirit, but they would not be able to look into His face. I also think about Paul when he was caught up into the third Heaven. Can you imagine leaving all that to come back to this lost and broken world?

Then, we have Jesus, God the Son, leaving the side of God, the Father, coming down here. He has always existed. He never has not been. He is the very Word that spoke all creation into existence. And he took the form of a baby to rescue us. Can you imagine leaving behind such exquisite beauty and ecstasy to live a life as a humble man? Only Love, Himself, could do such a thing. And He did that to be crucified for those little sins that we don’t think are a big deal. He did that for those sins that are so large that we lie to ourselves that we deserve to do such things. He did that for everything in between.

So what can we learn from this? Can we have perspective when our dreams are coming true to remember that our experience is only a whisper of Heaven? Can we cling to the hope that when we are not in the dark night of the soul, but in the dark night of a decade, that we will someday be carried away by Jesus, our Hope, someday?

Jesus died for us so that we could live for Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father

Thank you for this Christmas season to remember that Your Son will come back. Help me to live with that eternal perspective and not get carried away by my joys, sorrows, or daily trivialities.

In Jesus Most Precious Name,

Amen.
