Being a mother is one of the most wonderful yet challenging journeys a woman can ever go on. Motherhood is an incredibly important role. As a mom, you’re raising human beings with eternal souls to adulthood. But when you’re in the middle of all the work involved, you can sometimes get so stressed that you forget how much everything you’re doing for your children really matters. God sees everything you’re giving as a mother, and he appreciates how you’re loving the souls he has entrusted to your care. In the Bible, God has included many messages to help you with the sacred work you’re doing. The Bible is a living love letter from your Heavenly Father, who understands the burdens you carry as a mom. Here are 7 Bible verses to encourage and honor moms.
1. “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” – Proverbs 31:25. When you look in the mirror, “strength and dignity” might not be the first words that come to mind. You might see tired eyes or a shirt with a mystery stain, but God sees a strong woman who can live with dignity because you trust him to help you day by day. You can be confident that God will come through to help you with whatever you and your children need, so know you don’t need to worry. You can “laugh at the days to come” because you know that God will help you and your children overcome whatever challenges you all will face in the future. While you don’t have all the answers for your children’s futures right now, you don’t have to know how every problem will be solved. Instead of focusing on what can go wrong, focus on how to be strong by relying on God to empower you every day. Your strength and dignity don’t come from your performance as a parent, but from the fact that you’re God’s daughter who is loved completely and unconditionally.
2. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9. It’s easy to get discouraged when you feel like you’re working hard but still not seeing many results in return. You may teach your children kindness, and then they fight over a toy. You may teach them patience, and they melt down in the grocery store. In stressful situations, it can feel like seeds you’re planting in your children’s lives may never grow to become the harvest you hope to see in their lives. But this verse promises that you will actually see good results happen in God’s timing, as long as you don’t give up. Many of the seeds you’ve planted as a mom are growing under the surface of your children’s lives, where you can’t see them yet. God is encouraging you not to lose heart doing good, even when what you’re doing feels repetitive and thankless. The harvest is coming. One day, you’ll see spiritual seeds sprout in your children’s lives in ways that surprise you. God promises that all your hard work is not in vain. When you feel exhausted, remind yourself that the “proper time” is in God’s hands, not yours. Your job is to keep planting seeds with love, and God’s job is to make them grow. God sees every meal you cook, every tear you wipe, and every time you choose patience over anger when your children make mistakes. None of what you’re doing as a mom will be wasted!
3. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Matthew 11:28-29. You probably work hard to make sure your children get rest. You tuck them into bed, monitor their sleep cycles, and make sure they regularly have free time in their schedules to rest. But what about your own rest? Jesus gives you a personal invitation in these Bible verses, calling you to follow his example of getting enough rest. Motherhood can make you feel burdened by the heavy responsibilities you’re carrying. God is asking you to trade your heavy burdens for the rest he wants to give you when you trust and rely on him day by day. God isn’t a demanding taskmaster who’s disappointed when you can’t do it all. Instead, he’s gentle and humble! God wants to walk beside you, carrying the heaviest parts of your parenting load so you can be well. So, when you’re exhausted from your work as a mom, remember that you don’t have to carry the weight of your family on your own shoulders. God is your partner in this, and he will give you the rest you need.
4. “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” – 2 Timothy 1:5. This verse is a powerful reminder of the legacy you’re building as a mom. As you love your children, you’re doing the important work of showing them what it looks like to follow God. Your children are watching the ways you put your faith into action, such as how you handle stress, how you apologize when you’ve made a mistake, and how you turn to prayer when you’re worried. You, their mother, are the first person who shows them what God’s love looks like. Like Eunice, your “sincere faith” is a gift that you’re passing down to younger generations. Don’t worry about trying to have perfect faith; no one does in this fallen world. Just show your children that you trust God in the middle of your struggles and be honest about how much you need God’s help. God chose you specifically to be the mother of your children because he knew that your unique personality, your specific struggles, and your particular way of loving would be exactly what they need to grow spiritually. You’re a vital link in a chain of faith that can stretch for generations to come.
5. “He tends his flock like a shepherd: he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” – Isaiah 40:11. This verse describes how God is a loving parent and how God leads people – like you – who are parents, as well. The way God leads you as a mom is “gently,” rather than pushing you, as others might if they don’t understand how you need to approach your parenting tasks. Gentleness shows spiritual strength, not weakness. God is a gentle shepherd who is mindful of your limitations and the needs of your “lambs.” When you feel rushed by the world or pressured to be productive in ways that don’t fit your current reality, remember that your shepherd is gentle. God carries your children “close to his heart,” which means they’re safe with God even when you can’t protect them from danger. God carries you, too, since you’re also one of God’s beloved children. So, you can trust God to care well for your children, and you can relax into God’s care with confidence yourself.
6. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” – Colossians 3:23-24. Motherhood involves a lot of work that people beyond your own family often don’t appreciate. But these verses assure you that Jesus sees everything you’re doing as a mother, from all your tasks (like cooking, cleaning, shopping, and driving your children around) to all the ways you’re practicing your faith while parenting (like staying calm during arguments, seeking God’s guidance to solve problems, encouraging your children when they’re facing challenges, and modeling what it looks like to trust God). These verses remind you that when you serve your children, you’re actually serving God at the same time! When you feel unappreciated by people, you can find comfort in knowing that your boss is God, and he’s the most caring employer you could ever have. God sees your heart behind your work, and he appreciates every single thing you do with love as a mom. These verses can help you see that motherhood is a holy calling that has eternal value.
7. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5. There’s a constant stream of advice coming at mothers today – from all sorts of places, like social media, books, and well-meaning strangers. It can be overwhelming to try to figure out the best parenting strategies. But you don’t have to study it all and choose from among so many options. This powerful verse gives you a direct line to the best advice possible. All you have to do is ask the ultimate parent, God. When you pray, God will give you the wisdom you need. Not only that, but God will do so “generously” and “without finding fault.” God won’t withhold his wisdom, and he won’t criticize your parenting. You can trust God to help you with whatever parenting decisions you need to make – such as how to handle a discipline issue, how to solve a problem one of your children is facing, or how to balance your own needs with the needs of your family. When you feel confused, you can ask God’s Holy Spirit to show you the wisest way forward. You’re never parenting alone because the source of all wisdom is just a prayer away.
In conclusion, being a mom is a challenging journey that’s full of hard work, but it’s also a tremendously important calling from God. The work you’re doing as a mother will matter forever. You’re shaping your children's souls, and that has eternal significance. God, who called you to this vital work, will help you with whatever you need to do it well. When you could use a fresh dose of encouragement or appreciation, read these Bible verses and let them sink into your soul as loving messages from God to you!
