27 Bible Verses about God's Name Adonai

As my mentor used to say, the Kingdom of God isn’t a democracy. We don’t vote for who’s in control. God holds all sovereignty. Repentance, then, is simply recognizing and submitting to his Lordship.

The name “Adonai” comes from the Hebrew word meaning “Lord” or “Master.” In the Bible, it’s more than a title. Adonai reveals God’s rightful and complete authority over all things, including us and our lives.

  • First, Adonai declares God as sovereign over creation. He rules the heavens, the earth, and every nation. Nothing operates outside his will. He directs history, nations, and holds all things together by the power of his word (Colossians 1:17). Adonai tells us God is the ultimate ruler.

  • Second, as the only Lord, he must be submitted to and obeyed. Because of the Fall, we are all in rebellion and must repent, submitting to him and choosing to obey him as rightful king. He will not force us, but that doesn’t mean he’s not Lord; it only means he loves us and seeks our relationship. He governs in compassion and calls us to trust and follow him and his commands.

  • Third, the Bible reveals Adonai as the only one worthy of worship. Because he is the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and the only ruler of all things and people and nations, he alone deserves awe, reverence, godly fear, praise, and devotion. His holiness and majesty set him above and apart from all other gods and rulers. We must worship him accordingly.

While the New Testament doesn’t use the Hebrew word Adonai, it consistently calls Jesus “Lord,” both by word and through narratives underscoring the three aspects of lordship above. The New Testament affirms Christ’s kingship and reveals his full divinity.

Here are 27 verses separated by these three aspects.

  1. “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 8. “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.” – Psalm 95:6

Like every name of God from the Bible, Adonai is more than a title; it defines reality. God rules over all things, calls us into surrender, and alone deserves our worship.

Recognizing him as Lord means we stop seeking our way. We end an attempt at self-rule (doomed to failure) and align our lives with his will. Our submission doesn’t end in loss or lack. We gain freedom under the good and righteous King. We follow with obedience, awe, and praise.

Let us lay down our plans, lift our eyes, and honor him as Adonai. Choose to follow his loving voice, trust his compassionate authority, and worship him with your whole life.

Peace.
