Rick Warren Reflects on Ministry, Mentorship, and Mission

Updated Feb 19, 2026

Rick Warren is known to many as the Purpose Driven author and former pastor of Saddleback Church, in a sit-down interview with Jamaal Bernard, pastor of Christian Cultural Center and host of the podcast OffScript.

In this episode of the podcast, Rick offers wisdom and insight to Jamaal, who has recently taken the helm from his father, AR Bernard. In the series, Rick starts off by telling Jamaal that he would offer his resignation to God every Saturday night, “I would say a prayer, telling God that I was willing to do whatever He wanted me to do. If you hold something with an open hand, all the stress goes down.” Rick Warren retired from his pastoral duties at Saddleback, in September 2022 and has been on a mission to spread the gospel to the entire world by 2033, “I’m not saying that’s when God is going to come back.” As Warren laughs about the date that he believes God has given him. Throughout the conversation, Warren offers insight into what pastoring Saddleback was like, along with what he’s doing now and a warning on race and culture for the church.
