God Won't Give Me More Than I Can Handle Is a Biblical Concept... Isn't It?

I think that's one of those statements like, "God helps those who helps themselves, that's somewhere in Scripture, right? God won't give you more than you can handle. That's somewhere in Scripture."

It's not, it's nowhere in Scripture. Now, there is the scripture that says in 2 Corinthians, “God won't temp you beyond what you can handle, always provide a way of escape.” But, that's a very different concept.

So, what I mean by saying it's a lie that God won't ever give you more than you can handle, its budding up against the American cavalier, independent spirit that says, "I can do this. Because God won't give me more than I can handle," means I can pull myself up by the bootstraps, I can do this thing. God's not going to give me more than I can handle.

I think that's the antithesis of the Gospel, because the Gospel is He is going to crush you, He's going to show you that you're not a home that needs to have the bathroom remodeled, you know. A little tile down in the kitchen. You're a home that needs to be demolished and rebuilt. The only way you come to that realization that you need to be demolished and raised and rebuilt is if you're crushed by what you can't handle.

So God's role, the Spirit's role, life is intended to give you all these things that you can't handle, so you throw your hands up and say, "Jesus help me." Raise that little white flag, saying, "I need You because I can't handle this."

So if God only gave us what we could handle, we would never see our need for Him. We'd never respond to it. I think it's the exact opposite of what He does constantly day in and day out. So, that we see, Jesus I need you.
