Alex Kendrick Revisits the Story That Started It All With ‘Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul’
More than 20 years after Flywheel launched the Kendrick Brothers’ filmmaking journey, Alex Kendrick is returning to the story that started it all with Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul, coming to theaters October 16.
In this conversation, Alex joins Brandon Woolum to share how a trip to Brazil to train Christian filmmakers unexpectedly opened the door to reimagine Flywheel for a new generation. Filmed in Rio de Janeiro with a Brazilian cast and crew, the new film preserves the heart of the original story while bringing it to life in a new culture, setting and era.
Alex also reflects on the humble beginnings of the original Flywheel, the lessons he and his brothers have learned through more than two decades of filmmaking, and why he believes Christian films continue to grow in both excellence and impact. He explains how the Kendrick Brothers approach sharing the Gospel through storytelling, saying their ultimate canvas isn't simply the movie screen—it's the heart of the person watching.
The conversation also explores the film's central themes of integrity, surrender, redemption and second chances, along with the new eight-part Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul Bible Study. Alex shares how the study challenges believers to consider what it truly means for Jesus to be Lord over every part of life—from marriage and parenting to business and relationships.
And for anyone who feels they've compromised too much or gone too far for God to use them again, Alex offers a powerful reminder of the hope, forgiveness and transformation found through Jesus Christ.
Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul arrives in theaters October 16, with an English-dubbed version available for U.S. audiences. The companion Bible study releases October 6.
