A Prayer for Single-Hearted Focus in a Busy Season | Your Daily Prayer
Reflecting on Jesus' words to Martha in Luke 10:41-42, Rachel Wojo explains why the answer to a busy season isn't always a less busy schedule. Instead, believers can protect their hearts from distraction by keeping Jesus central and remembering people over projects. This devotional offers a prayer for anyone feeling scattered, overwhelmed, or pulled in too many directions.
What Does the Bible Say About Busyness?
The Bible doesn't teach that having a full schedule is automatically wrong. Work, service, family responsibilities, and caring for others can all be worthwhile. However, Jesus' interaction with Martha in Luke 10 shows that even good responsibilities can become spiritually distracting when worry and activity crowd out attention to Christ.
Biblical wisdom therefore isn't simply about doing less. It's about recognizing what matters most.
What Was Martha's Problem in Luke 10:41-42?
Martha was serving Jesus and her guests, but Jesus identified what was happening beneath her activity: she was “worried and upset about many things.”
The passage isn't simply a contrast between working and sitting still. Jesus redirects Martha's attention toward what Mary had chosen—being present with him and receiving his teaching.
The problem wasn't merely that Martha was busy.
Her busyness had captured her attention and disturbed her heart.
How Can I Focus on God During a Busy Season?
A busy season doesn't always require an empty calendar. Christians can remain spiritually grounded by intentionally protecting time and attention for God, praying throughout ordinary activities, returning to Scripture, resisting unnecessary distractions, and remembering that loving people is more important than simply completing projects.
Does Following Jesus Mean I Need to Be Less Busy?
Not necessarily.
Some seasons genuinely require more work and responsibility than others. The better question is whether your responsibilities are causing you to neglect your relationship with God or consistently treat people as interruptions.
Rachel's practical principle is simple:
Remember people over projects.
