Bringing My Brokenness to the God Who Heals
Evening Scripture
Psalm, Chapter 147
Praise the Lord.
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise him!
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the exiles of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.
The Lord sustains the humble
but casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the Lord with grateful praise;
make music to our God on the harp.
He covers the sky with clouds;
he supplies the earth with rain
and makes grass grow on the hills.
He provides food for the cattle
and for the young ravens when they call.
His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;
the Lord delights in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love.
Extol the Lord, Jerusalem;
praise your God, Zion.
He strengthens the bars of your gates
and blesses your people within you.
He grants peace to your borders
and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.
He sends his command to the earth;
his word runs swiftly.
He spreads the snow like wool
and scatters the frost like ashes.
He hurls down his hail like pebbles.
Who can withstand his icy blast?
He sends his word and melts them;
he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.
He has revealed his word to Jacob,
his laws and decrees to Israel.
He has done this for no other nation;
they do not know his laws.
Praise the Lord.
Evening Reflection
To be heartbroken is a tough place to be. Regardless of the cause, the challenge is that often, we must continue living through the pain of being brokenhearted. In some church circles, you can’t even admit your brokenness because, after all, you are blessed and highly favored, so how could your heart ever be broken? Thankfully, this Psalm reminds us of God’s love and care for those who are broken.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).
Someone who is brokenhearted has been crushed, shattered, or wounded deeply. This is not a temporary situation but one that lingers. This state of brokenness can often leave you feeling hopeless.
That’s why the healing God brings to those who are brokenhearted is so amazing. What I love about the imagery in this verse is that he doesn’t just heal from a distance, he binds up your wounds. This means he carefully pays attention to the details of your situation, and, like a caregiver, he gently wraps and treats your wounds.
This should give you confidence to know that you can bring all your brokenness to the Lord. You don’t have to hide it, carry it, or pretend you are strong. Instead, you can come to the one who will not just bandage your wounds but will bring healing to every broken place.
God does not just see your broken heart; more importantly, he knows how to put it back together again. So whatever your situation, you can trust God with your brokenness and discover that his tender and loving care can heal even the deepest hurt.
Evening Prayer
Lord,
I am hurting. I have cried many tears and sometimes feel as if my situation is beyond repair. Today, I bring you my broken heart that feels shattered into a thousand pieces. I ask that you begin the healing process in my heart. I confess, I don’t know where to begin, so I leave even that at your feet. Walk with me through this situation and help me find healing in your presence.
Father, I also ask that you change my perspective of my situation so that the places where I was broken become the places of my greatest strength and greatest testimony. Lastly, help me be honest with you and trust you enough to let you into those hurting places, knowing that you can heal them.
I pray all this in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
