Shade for the Worn-Out Soul
Your Nightly Prayer
By Sophia Bricker
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
"But you are a tower of refuge to the poor, O LORD, a tower of refuge to the needy in distress. You are a refuge from the storm and a shelter from the heat. For the oppressive acts of ruthless people are like a storm beating against a wall. - Isaiah 25:4, NLT
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Sweat stung my eyes as I gazed at the amusement park. Everything was designed to resemble a country in Europe: The United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and Italy. Yet as much as the buildings evoked a sense of being in a different place, the heat remained the same–sticky, humid weather that dogged my family each summer. That year, during our family trip, the heat rose to a record-breaking level.
Having spent a great deal of money on cold drinks, we only learned about the reusable cup available for purchase on the last day of our vacation. As a result, my mother joked that the place was “home to the $100 soda.” Relief from oppressive heat is often costly, whether through fans, air conditioning, or an abundance of cold drinks. Life itself can also feel as hot and draining as the warmest summer day. And it can likewise be challenging to find refuge from the problems we encounter.
Scripture compared the acts of the ruthless––those who threatened the poor and needy––to a driving storm or a desert (Isaiah 25:4-5). The oppressed were worn out from being taunted and persecuted by their enemies. Amid their pain and weariness, God provided shelter. This image of the people of God resting in His shade is mirrored in Revelation when John sees the great multitude in heaven wearing white robes (Revelation 7:9-17). They are described as having found shelter in God so that, “Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat” (Revelation 7:16, NIV). They find rest in the loving care of their Savior.
Although this promise, and the one mentioned in Isaiah, contain future promises yet to be fulfilled, we can find strength in the words today, knowing that the Shepherd, who will lead us to the cool banks of the living waters where He will wipe away our tears, walks with us now. He is beside us and will shelter us when circumstances leave us worn out. We need only turn to Him.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Lord,
You provide hope to the weary, a home to the orphaned, and rest for a weary soul. Scripture describes how You give shelter in the shadow of Your wings, such as the care You showed Ruth, though she was a foreigner in Israel. Likewise, the multitude in heaven rests in the shade of Your presence. Help me to find comfort in the shelter of Your love today, a refuge amid the oppressive heat of life. Too often, I am drained by the struggle of enduring suffering and disappointment. May I rest, knowing You provide the Living Water who will sustain me. In You, I can find shade for my weary soul.
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
- The shade of a tree on a hot day. How does it feel? How might the image of the sheltering branches remind you of God’s care?
- The refreshing aspect of water, or other cool drinks. Not only does water provide a reprieve from the heat, but it also provides life-giving replenishment. In what way does this change your perspective of the Savior’s promise to provide living water? See John 4:14.
- A verse that mentions the sheltering presence of God (e.g., Psalm 59:16; 63:7). What are some ways you can ensure that truth is visible when you are most weary?
