Peace for Busy Evenings Again
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat” (Psalm 147:14, NIV)
SOMETHING TO PONDER
While most people love summer, no one loves the end of it more than a parent sending their child back to school. Or so I’m told! With education, however, comes the added stress of busy evenings and chaotic schedules. Can we talk about the overlap among cross-country, football, and golf schedules? Yikes!
As we all prepare for the return of busier evenings and fuller activities, it’s important to remember that both slow and busy seasons play an important role in our lives. We might enjoy one and despise the other, but remember that every time of the year can serve as an illustration in our lives. Does Ecclesiastes ring a familiar bell for anyone?
For most of us, this slow fall fade brings up a lot of tension. Being busy can feel like a blessing but also overwhelming, with the incredible pressure to keep up. When Psalm 147:14 offers us peace, however, it reveals that, unlike the busyness around us, peace is given, not earned. It’s peace that’s granted to our borders, boundaries, and limits within His will for our lives.
Friends, God cares about our internal pace, not just our external productivity. In other words, He cares about our hearts just as much as our actions. Not just what’s inside of us, but what overflows.
Today, you and I don’t have to match the speed of our schedules (though it will be tempting). We don’t even need to match the superhuman neighbor's pace with 5 kids in 6 different sports. No, peace can coexist within full days if our minds and hearts are set on Him. How? Because peace isn’t a feeling, but a person. When the presence of Jesus lives within us, His peace exudes even in difficult places. So, when we trust Him, “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7, NIV).
This week, I encourage you to pause between activities and remember who God is amidst our chaos. Then release the perfectionism and comparison that are holding you back. Full doesn’t have to mean frantic. But it is an opportunity to lean more and more into the Lord’s guidance.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Jesus, my schedule is so busy that I’m struggling to keep up. I confess the overwhelm of this season to you, and I lay down the pressure I’m feeling inside. Please surround me with your peace and help me to follow your pace for my life. I surrender the control of outcomes, and I thank you for your constant provision and presence in my life. I love you, Lord. Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
What feels overwhelming in your schedule right now? What can you remove that’s unnecessary?
Where do you need boundaries or margin? Put the Sabbath on your calendar and take small breaks throughout the day to reset.
What would peace look like in a full evening? Discuss with your family how you can implement needed changes.
