Faithfulness in Small Assignments
Your Nightly Prayer
By Lynette Kittle
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” - Luke 16:10
SOMETHING TO PONDER
How are we at handling small tasks in our lives, ones that we may not want to do, duties we feel are insignificant, and some we didn’t even ask to be assigned to in the first place? Do we run through them as quickly and haphazardly as possible because they aren’t important to us, just to get through them and out-of-the-way, or do we take care to carry them out to the best of our abilities, no matter how small or insignificant the assignment might seem? We may think God doesn’t really care about the small things in life, but the truth is God values obedience in the ordinary things of life, and He is actually paying attention to how we carry them out.
Often, we can let little assignments slip through the cracks because we don’t think they really matter in life or to God. But small assignments are very important to Him because they often reveal the true condition of our hearts, whether we are full of integrity, love, and faithfulness, or selfishness, pride, and unbelief. Sometimes we don’t think about how our faithfulness in small things may affect others around us, who will have to pick up the slack when we drop the ball and choose the easier route for ourselves. It may not be laziness behind our slacking off, but a rebellious heart towards God, hidden deep within us, something we may not even be aware of, that leads us to disobey Him in small ways, not truly recognizing it for what it is in our lives.
Out of a healthy fear of God, we don’t want to disobey Him in the bigger things of life and face the consequences of sin. Yet, in small ways, we may be acting out, feeling like we have a say in whether we fully obey Him, which ultimately we do. Still, God sees, as 2 Chronicles 16:9 describes, “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him….” God sees as being faithful in small things, as being fully committed to Him, so much so that He seeks the earth to find those of us who are.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Father,
Forgive me for the small assignments in life that I have failed to take seriously. Help me to understand that faithfulness is being lived out in the small things assigned to us, the ones we don’t necessarily think really matter in life. Daily remind me that You value our obedience in carrying them out. Lead me to be obedient in the everyday, ordinary tasks given to me in life, realizing that by doing so, my faith is being strengthened so that more may be entrusted to me. Lead me to glorify and honor You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name,
Amen
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
- Do you have a pattern of letting little things slip, thinking they aren’t important in the long run? If so, ask God to correct your thinking and to remind you to be faithful in the little things by being obedient to His word.
- Check yourself to see if letting small tasks slip by is possibly caused by hidden rebellion in your heart. If so, repent, confess, and ask God to cleanse your heart from all unrighteousness.
- Each morning, ask the Holy Spirit to lead and remind you to be faithful in fulfilling your small assignments.
