A Prayer When Election Anxiety Steals Your Peace
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise— In God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? - Psalm 56:3-4
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Elections are upon us, and if you’re like me, you may feel exhausted by the tension and division that have become increasingly common in our society when it’s time to head to the polls. Discord, negativity, and despair seem to permeate our culture when power is up for grabs.
As Christ followers, we are called to respond differently to political changes and world events. The way we converse, respond, mediate, and engage with the political sphere as believers should be defined by a radical hope that comes from God alone. While we should thoughtfully engage in the political sphere, we can rest easy, no matter what happens, because we put our trust in the Lord! We are not afraid of mortals; we know that the work of Christ is finished and the best is yet to come.
As we navigate this season, we must cling to the central truth that our hope comes from God alone. Psalm 39:7 reminds us, “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.” When this is our foundational belief, we can begin to let go of the anxiety that clings to us as the world's chaos surges around us. It also helps us to remain calm, compassionate, and caring as we discuss political matters with others. We can remain composed because we aren’t trusting a system to bring goodness and mercy into our world; we know that, come what may, God alone ushers light into the darkness.
How do we respond peacefully to political events?
The Bride of Christ can engage in ceaseless prayer as we hear the news and process election results. Prayer is powerful and effective. It’s our first step in seeing change happen in our world. Worship transforms our hearts and is the proper Christian response, no matter our circumstances. Take time to worship God through this season. Finally, we can continue to be the light. We care for the brokenhearted, the widows, orphans, outcasts, and those who need freedom. Politicians can never stop us from embodying Christ's love for others, and that is our mission at all times.
God’s peace surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7). It permeates our souls when we need it most. Cling to God’s supernatural peace as you process politics.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Father, I pray for the church and for my heart. Help us as we go through this season of political change. Let your will be done. Bring righteous men and policies into place in our country. But, Father, whatever happens, I have peace because my hope is in you alone. Give me the strength to love others well, even those who vote differently from me.
Father, I am sorry for the ways I’ve let politics in this country become a god in my life. Show me how to trust you to do your good work, no matter what is happening in our world. Bring revival into our nation. Change hearts at altars, change policies through transformed lives, and show us grace through the power of your presence.
Teach me how to worship you in every circumstance. Allow me to be the embodiment of the love of Christ in this dark world. We need you, Jesus. Have mercy on me, and also have mercy on our country. Work all things for our good by your grace. Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
Memorize Psalm 56:3-4. Let these words be your mantra in this season.
When you are tempted to get anxious about what is happening in our world, return to the call to pray, worship, and serve. Find a way to do these things in response to whatever changes happen in politics.
Repent for allowing political decisions to be your god. Ask God to be your firm foundation and sure hope in our chaotic world.
