Living in Abundant Life
By Andrea Chatelain

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

I’m often the bad guy in my house. The one who says no cookies before dinner, yes you need your coat, and no you can’t ride your bike to Mason’s house because that’s too far. My children don’t understand the boundaries I provide, so they push back in frustration, talk back in disobedience, or withdraw with the silent treatment. Ironically, that’s how I reacted to God for a long time.

God don’t You know that this is what I want? Why won’t You allow me to achieve my dreams? He seemed like another killjoy, another one trying to control my life. I used to think “having life to the full” meant living in pleasure, excitement, and comfort. When things didn’t go my way, I questioned God or distanced myself from Him just like my kids do to me.

Then I experienced a season of pain and confusion. When I had nowhere else to run, I ran to Jesus. And I found peace and comfort in His constant companionship and love. It made me sad that I had lived so many years without Him because of my pride. I realized Jesus doesn’t want leadership to take away our joy, He wants us to surrender our plans so that we may have life to the full.

As I continue reading Scripture, praying, and trusting God’s will for each day, I feel more empowered and excited. Living with Jesus as my best friend means gaining unconditional love, unexplainable peace, and over-reaching grace. What part of your life is God asking you to surrender to Him so you can truly live fully alive?
