Estranged to Reconciled
By Kristen Terrette

“Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.” Colossians 1:21

My husband has been estranged from his biological father since he was a toddler. Obviously, this broken relationship wasn’t my husband’s fault. In fact, he tried to build a semblance of a relationship out of nothing years ago. But his father didn’t reciprocate.

The pain caused by this brokenness is incomprehensible. It reminds me of how much more God, who made us and loves us more than we can ever understand, is heartbroken when we’re estranged from Him. It hurts Him when we don’t receive the knowledge and love He longs to give us. Today’s verse explains that our evil behavior separates us from God and makes us His hostile enemies.

We can fix this estrangement by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior. God, the Creator of all, made this process easy. First, we must believe in Jesus, accepting that He is God’s Son and equal to the Father. We accept that His death on the cross was actually the punishment for our sins that had left us estranged from God. Next, we ask Him to take control of our lives, and He gives us His Spirit, identifying us as His and enabling us to live with Him in eternity.

Acknowledge this amazing free gift. Our alienated and evil minds can be reconciled with God through Jesus. Don’t go another day struggling with the pain of your broken relationship with your Heavenly Father. He’s made a way to turn that heartbreak into joy. Accept it. Live it. And share it.
