‘Fess Up and Pray
By Shirley Brosius

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

Strong relationships require keeping short accounts. My friend Kim grabbed my hand saying, “I must apologize to you.” At that moment, I couldn’t think of any way she’d offended me. Then she reminded me that when I had tapped my finger to test a microphone at a speaking engagement, she had blurted in frustration, “Don’t do that. Don’t ever do that.” I had seen many speakers tap a microphone to test the sound and had no idea that could damage its fragile wiring.

She, another friend, and I have met as a small Bible study group for more than 20 years. Our meetings grew into a speaking ministry, so we spend much time together, planning and traveling to events. It’s easy to offend or hurt one another. During our weekly meetings we exchange prayer requests, pray for each another, and continue praying throughout the week. Our relationship remains strong because we carry each other’s burdens and, as my friend’s remarks show, we keep short accounts. If one of us feels she offends another, we apologize.

As Christian speakers we want to model godly behavior, which includes confessing our sins to each other and praying for each other. Healthy relationships contribute to individual health. It’s common knowledge that bitterness and unforgiveness may breed physical disorders. So confession and prayer are good for the body and the soul. Where better to practice such disciplines than in a small group? Join or create one today.
