The Intensity of the Psalms

Ps 7:1O LORD my God, I take refuge in you; save and deliver me from all who pursue me,

Ps 7:2or they will tear me like a lion and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

Sometimes the psalms seem so intense don’t they? I love them, however, because life is so intense at times. When I received the news that my son who is profoundly deaf would go blind by 10, I cried out to the Lord to the degree illustrated in this psalm. You see, life had gotten pretty intense for my family and for me with the news about my son. As a result, I had the same nightmare every night when I went to sleep. I could not escape its grasp. Then, one day, I got on my knees, determined not to get up until I heard God speak to me. I needed to hear Him say “something- anything” that would set me free from the grip of fear that was wrapped around my neck in regard to my son’s life.

And then, it hit me, God gave His Son to the point of death upon a cross. What then, would become of my son? I was more terrified than I was when I began my prayer, but then the reality that God is bigger than death, blindness, and my own fears flooded within me and around me. I received a glimpse of His magnitude. It was only a glimpse, however, because as soon as I saw a glimpse it became bigger than my mind’s eye could comprehend. Quickly, like a warm, rushing wind, peace that surpassed all understanding nestled into the recesses of my mind and heart. God is a loving Father, and He did speak to me during that intense prayer time of seeking Him. Later that night, God in His sovereignty lulled me to sleep and freed me from my fears and nightmares.

In the darkness may we seek Him and await His loving Word. It is in such times that the light of His presence casts the darkness as far as the east is to the west. Only God is capable of such deliverance.
