"Saul sent messengers that night to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, told him, ‘If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.'"
I Samuel 19: 11, Amplified Bible
"A Constant Love"
"We should measure affection, not like youngsters by the ardor of its passion, but by its strength and constancy."
Has there been a relationship or situation in my life when I found that having a spirit of "constancy" paid off in the end?
What does it mean to me to be "constant" in my love?
"To be capable of steady friendship or lasting love, are the two greatest proofs, not only of goodness of heart, but of strength of mind."
"Constancy" - Steadfastness and faithfulness. The quality of being faithful.
"There are two sorts of constancy in love, the one comes from the constant discovery in our beloved of new grounds for love, and the other comes from making it a point of honour to be constant."
As we delve deeper into the life of Michal, David's first wife and King Saul's daughter, the one word I identify with her is "constancy" or as Webster's Dictionary defines - "Steadfast faithfulness." Especially in the face of having her life threatened.
First of all, Michal was raised by a man who exhibited vicious behavior. To say Saul had a temper and was filled with violent rage would be an understatement. It wouldn't surprise me at all if his children weren't afraid of him. Who wouldn't be?
When Michal fell in love with David and married him, it wasn't long before we find that Saul not only threatened David's life, he even went so far as to throw a spear at David. Fortunately, Saul's aim wasn't that great at the time of this incident and David was able to escape.
However, just as her brother Jonathan had protected David, we find Michal standing up for her husband who was the innocent victim of this terrorizing situation.
Let's be clear about one thing. Being a female and standing up for yourself during this time in history was not easy. Furthermore, Michal wasn't just standing up to any old dad. Her father held all the power as king and could have ordered her to be killed for crossing him.
A person who is constant and can be depended upon through thick and thin, is a person who has a brave heart and bold spirit. And these are qualities that were certainly present in Michal's life.
Despite the environment both Jonathan and Michal lived in, they provided constancy of friendship and a steadfast loyalty to David that is rarely seen.
In our world today, where things and people are used, then tossed aside like yesterday's leftovers, it is important to recognize that when we show a constant, steadfast spirit to those around us, we say by our actions more than anything we can say by our words. What's more, you and I have, in our lives, been the recipients of such constant love and care by our Father, through all our highs and lows, that passing on the gift of constant love to others certainly reflects the blessings we have received.
This thought was expressed so perfectly by the English missionary to China, Frank Houghton when he penned the words:
"This is the road of my desire-
Learning to love as God loves me,
Ready to pass through flood or fire
With Christ's unwearying constancy."
"The tapers in the great God's hall
Burn ageless, beautiful and white.
But only with the fall of dusk
Disclose to earth their faithful light.
Earth keeps her lamps of beauty, too,
Fairer than stars in fields above;
Dark hours of grief and pain reveal
The undreamed constancy of love."
Philip Jerome Cleveland
I am extremely fond of the poems written by Frances Havergal, many of which can be found in old devotional books. In 1878, she wrote these words: "Truehearted, Wholehearted, Faithful and Loyal." These words became the foundation of a hymn whose tune was written by George C. Stebbins. As we think about the word "constancy" and what it means to each of us personally may we be inspired by the thoughts Frances Havergal expressed:
"Truehearted, wholehearted, faithful and loyal,
King of our lives, by Thy grace will be;
Under the standard exalted and royal,
Strong in Thy strength…for Thee."
"Thou shall act in the fear of the Lord, faithfully and with a loyal constant heart."
