A Prayer to Savor the Goodness of God

Babies and puppies put everything they come in contact with into their mouths to discover and see what it’s made of. Like them, God calls us to taste His goodness so that we may, too, see and discover who He is. Yet, it’s easy for us to get caught up in our lives to the point where we start taking God’s goodness for granted, missing out on tasting and savoring it, like many of us do with a morning cup of coffee. The definition of savor means to taste and enjoy completely. So what exactly is the goodness of God and how can we taste and savor it?

The following are seven truths about the goodness of God and how we can savor it each and every day for ourselves.

1. God offers His goodness to us. Because He does, we are able receive it. If He didn’t extend it to us, there is no way we could experience it on our own, so as the psalmist wrote, God is inviting us to taste His goodness, and one way to do that is to take refuge in Him.

2. God’s goodness is all that is good in life. If there is something good in life, it has come from Him, because He is the only source and resource available for goodness. Outside of Him, there is nothing good. 1 Timothy 4:4 confirms, “For everything God created is good.”

3. God’s goodness follows us and endures forever. We don’t have to look for His goodness because He assures us that it will follow us all the days of our lives and we can take as long as we want to enjoy it, because there is no expiration or closing date on it.

As Psalm 23:6 assures us, “Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

4. God’s goodness is available to us. His goodness isn’t stagnating or unreachable to us but lives where we can attain it. “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13).

5. God’s goodness is found in His light. Called to walk in the light, Ephesians 5:9 explains to us the benefits of doing so and how it leads us to His goodness “(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth).”

6. God’s goodness is stored up for us. We don’t have to feel vulnerable or afraid that we will lose or miss out on His goodness, because He is storing it up for us, keeping it for us until the day we are able to enjoy and savor it with Him.

Psalm 31:19 describes “How abundant are the good things that You have stored up for those who fear You, that You bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in You.”

7. God gives us His goodness. Often, people will point fingers at God, accusing Him of withholding good from their lives, but He doesn’t, as Psalm 84:11explains. “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.”

Whenever we are tempted to question the goodness of God, James 1:17 reminds us that, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

Let’s Pray:

Dear Father,
Our hearts are deeply grateful for Your unfailing goodness that you generously bestow on us each and every day, knowing every good and perfect gift comes from You, as You are the only source of goodness in this world. You give to us, never withholding what is good, calling out to us to dwell in Your goodness as we bask in Your light. Thank You for offering Your goodness to us, storing it up for our future, and causing it to follow us all the days of our lives, never to diminish, but lasting forever and forever. Help us to wake up each morning with a desire to savor Your goodness every day of our lives.
