Today's Special is: Laughter the Best Medicine

Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Dawn Mast

Main Ingredient:

Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.

Psalm 126:2a NIV

Entree:

I'm so thankful our Lord has a sense of humor. Of course being a Christian is serious business, but there are also plenty of lighthearted moments when we just need to laugh at life. When you think God might be teaching you humility can be one of those times.

While helping our daughter clean her room one day I was trying to be efficient with time and the fact that I only have two hands. Whenever I found a hair clip or bobby pin I stuck it in my hair. My beauty advice to you is to please take a quick look in the mirror before leaving the house.

That's all.

Later, while out running errands, my daughter looked at me and said, "Mommy. Why do you have all my colorful clips in your hair?" Even in the midst of feeling ridiculous, I managed a feeling of pride that at least my anti-wrinkle cream was working. That is, until I remembered it was working so well, I needed to put Clearasil on a pimple. And that glob was still on my face.

At that humiliating moment I still managed to shake my head and just laugh at myself. My day had been a mixture of joy and exasperation, and honestly, some days I handle the stress with the very opposite of laughter.

So, how come some days I laugh and other days I lash out? The stress is the same. The people in my life are the same. I've got the same colorful thingamajigs sticking out of my hair. In public.

It's all about me turning my heart to The Lord before the stress of the day gets ahold of me. I'd much rather laugh with my family and have them see me happy in Jesus, than be a stressed out mama.

Take Out:

Smile. Sometimes it's all that's needed in a high stress, going to blow your top kind of moment. Praying helps too. Just a simple, "Lord, you see my emotions and they are about to get out of hand. Please give me peace and help me to respond as you would. I know you love me and want me to represent you well. Help me to do that. Amen."

Dessert:

Dear Lord, thank You for Your gift of laughter and help me to experience that today especially when I need to lessen my stress. Please show me if there is someone I can encourage today with a smile, a fun story or the gift of laughter. Amen.
