Thanking God Takes Practice – Beloved Women – October 8, 2019
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17 ESV)
There are times when thanking God seems easy, especially when we are in church or amongst other Christians. But what about those moments when we receive bad news, or when nothing seems to be going well? Thanking God will often be the last thing on our minds. But the Apostle Paul told the Colossians, and by extension us, that thanking God is not something we do when it’s convenient or when we are happy but an act that should be a part of our daily living. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we are called to “give thanks in all circumstances” (ESV). Not in some, but in all.
Even when our hearts are breaking and our lives are falling apart, God wants us to remain thankful and connected to him. This takes practice. It means going back to God as our help and our source. It means allowing the Holy Spirit work on our hearts and help us through life’s tests and trials. It means being intentional about building a thankful heart. Staying thankful helps us to realize that no matter how dark life gets, we are never alone.
Lord, I thank You for your Word and Your encouragement to me. Father, I pray I remain connected to You and continue to thank You in all things. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen.
What are you thankful for today?
