One Thing – Beloved Women – May 8, 2019
“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:42 NLT
When my children were younger, I looked forward to celebrating their birthdays. I would create a to-do list to guide my preparations. However, my to-do list often left me feeling overwhelmed.
In today’s reading, Martha, the queen of hospitality, felt overwhelmed. She and her sister Mary hosted Jesus and his disciples in their home. Although Martha loved entertaining, she felt there was a lot to do and shedid not have time to sit and enjoy the company of her guests.
On the other hand, Mary was sitting and listening to Jesus’ teaching. In frustration, Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. Jesus replied that Mary’s choice to sit before Him would not be taken from her.
Our constant busyness often makes us lose sight of what is most important. Sitting in Jesus’ presence is the “one thing” that is essential to walking in His power.
Dear Lord, sometimes I neglect spending quality time with you and worry over things that are not as important. Help me reduce the distractions in my life so I can experience your joy and peace with a grateful heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
What is keeping you from experiencing this “one thing”?
