6 Prayers When Mother’s Day is Full of Pain and Heartbreak

6 Prayers When Mother’s Day is Full of Pain and Heartbreak

Mother’s Day can be painful for many reasons. For many of us, it is painful because our mother has passed away; for others, they may have a poor relationship with their mother. As followers of Christ, we don't need to run from these feelings. If Mother's Day is full of pain and heartbreak, it is okay. God never expects us to pretend we are okay when we are not.

Instead, God meets us where we are and covers us with His grace. Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your cares on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” Regardless of the reason you are experiencing pain and heartbreak this Mother’s Day, find hope in God. He will bring healing to your weary heart and hope back into your soul.

I have seen Him work wonders in my own life, and I know He can do the same for you. Mother's Day may always be painful for us, but we can work through it with God's help. I miss my mom every day; however, Mother’s Day is particularly challenging. There are years that I have to isolate myself from the world to make it through. If this is something that you have to do this year, too, know that there is nothing wrong with taking time to grieve.

I grieve the loss of my mom on Mother’s Day due to her death, but you may be grieving your mom even while she is still alive. Perhaps your mom severely hurt you, tore you down, or made you feel bad about yourself. Leave room for these feelings and bring them to God. He will surround you with comfort and bring healing into your broken heart (Isaiah 61:1).

1. A Prayer to Cope with Your Mother’s Death

“‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

Dear Jesus, my mom passed away many years ago, but the pain is still there. I miss the way she smiled at me, built me up, and believed in me, even when no one else did. Please help me cope with my mom’s death this Mother’s Day; I cannot do it on my own. I need your love, grace, and strength.

Although Mother’s Day will never be the same again, I can still celebrate the memory of my mom. Surround me with loved ones who also knew my mother. Encourage us to talk about my mom and share cherished memories of her. Even though the pain might be overwhelming at times, I can cope with her death because of Your strength. Thank You for being my mightier Savior, Jesus. Amen.”

2. A Prayer to Grieve the Relationship You Didn't Have with Your Mom

“Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me” (Psalm 27:10).

Dear Jesus, my mother has not passed away, but she was not a very good mom to me. She hurt my feelings, made me feel like I was useless, and broke me beyond words. I wanted a positive and healthy mother-daughter relationship with my mom, but she didn't want me. Please help me to grieve the relationship I wanted with my mom, and to heal from this pain. It might take years for me to heal fully, but I trust in Your power, love, and support.

I didn't have the relationship with my mom I wanted, but I can still cultivate a relationship with You, Jesus. My mother forsook me, but You never will. You will always take me up, cover me with joy, and fill my heart with Your love. Thank you for being my best friend and closest companion. In Your Name, I pray, Amen.

3. A Prayer for Genuine Healing

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).

Dear God, I have been lying to myself for many years. I wanted to believe I was healed from my pain and heartbreak, but it is not true. The truth is that I am still experiencing pain over the death of my mom. She meant everything to me; now that she is gone, I don't see purpose in life anymore.

Please bring genuine healing into my soul: I need to move forward in life. I cannot keep living in the prison of pain; I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face again and experience happiness and joy. I know all these things are possible with You, God. Please help me truly heal today. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.

4. A Prayer to Keep Going Even When It's Hard

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

Dear Jesus, it is a challenge to get through Mother’s Day with all the constant ads, reminders, and events surrounding the holiday. I miss the presence of my mom in my life; seeing all these things only intensifies the pain. Please help me to make it through this Mother’s Day, even if that means staying at home and unsubscribing from the world for a day.

Life gets overwhelmingly difficult at times, but I'm thankful that I have You. Give me the strength to keep going and never give up. As long as I have You, I have confidence I can make it through the toughest of times. In Your Name, I pray, Amen.

5. A Prayer for God’s Comfort

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:3-5).

Dear God, I don't have much comfort in my life anymore, and any comfort I have gained is taken away each year on Mother's Day. I think I'm doing okay until I start seeing all the plans my friends have for Mother’s Day with their own moms. I look away with a glum heart and swallow the painful truth that my mom is no longer here.

Surround me with Your comfort, God. Help me know that You are always with me, surrounding me with love and bringing hope to my heart. With the comfort you give me, I will give to others. Many people are grieving their mother today, too; I can comfort them in the same way you have comforted me. In Your Son’s Name, I pray, Amen.

6. A Prayer to Emerge Stronger on the Other Side

“Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you’” (Isaiah 35:3-4)

Dear God, if I'm being honest, I can share with You that I am weaker than I have ever been. I like to pretend that I'm strong and have moved on from my mom, but it is not true. You already know my heart, God; please cover me with strength and healing during this time. I am not strong enough on my own to face Mother's Day, but I am strong enough in You.

Thank you for blessing me with strength and helping me to emerge stronger on the other side. Mother’s Day may be heavy for me, but I trust that You can help me carry this heavy weight. Your goodness, power, and greatness have no bounds. In Jesus' powerful Name, I pray, Amen.
