3 Biblical Reminders on the Importance of Rest

Originally published Monday, 26 August 2019.

Recently, the Lord has placed the topic of rest on my heart. As I prepare my message for this year’s Beloved Women’s Conference, I’m reminded of the importance of rest. This year’s conference theme is “Soul Rest,” and as I share the theme with other women, the topic seems to really resonate. So I want to share a few things I’m learning about rest with you too:

1. Rest comes from Jesus.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11:28-30‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

Some rest means taking a nap, while other times a nap won’t satisfy. It’s then we need rest for our souls. It’s the type of rest we can only receive from Jesus through seeking Him and giving Him our burdens.

2. God expects us to get tired.

“Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40:30-31‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

A busy and tired life is not a badge of honor, and God did not make us to push our way through life. If you’re tired, that doesn’t mean you’re lazy or weak. It means you’re human. God expects you to get tired, which is why He provides the rest we need.

3. God does not want us to be busy. He wants us to be fruitful.

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” ‭‭John‬ ‭15:4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Busy is what we do on our own, in the flesh. Being fruitful is a result of leaning on God and abiding in Him. If you’re tired today, realize you don’t have to do everything in your own willpower. Cast your cares on God and trust Him. He can do far more in your weakness than you can do in your own strength.

You may be wondering how do I trust God when I'm weary, or how do I know if I'm just physically tired or need soul rest? I'll be answering these questions and more in new upcoming videos at www.belovedwomen.org and of course at this year's Beloved Women's Conference
