"And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."
John 14: 16
King James Version

"Praying the Praise Prayer - I Invite"

"The Holy Spirit's great task is to carry on the work for which Jesus sacrificed His throne and His life - the redemption of fallen humanity."
Alan Redpath

Have I invited the presence of the Holy Spirit into my life?

"Spirit-filled souls are ablaze for God. They love with a love that glows. They serve with a faith that kindles. They serve with a devotion that consumes. They hate sin with fierceness that burns. They rejoice with a joy that radiates. Love is perfected in the fire of God."
Samuel Chadwick

"I" - I invite the Holy Spirit to fill me today.

Recently, I've received several invitations to events. I love getting invitations because it tells me that someone wants me to participate in an event that is important in their life.  In fact, the definition of the word "invite" is "to ask for someone's presence." There's more though.  "Invite" also means you are "welcoming" someone and "encouraging" them to be a participant with you.

In the Hebrew, one word that is used in place of "invite" is the word "bid."  Matthew 22 contains a parable of Jesus about a marriage feast.  In the story, many of the guests offered excuses and declined the invitation.  The story tells us that the King instructed his servants to go out into the highways and "bid" or call or invite "as many as ye shall find."  I love the word "bid" because it has a special gentleness to it that makes you feel as though the one inviting you has a deep longing for your company.

This sense of a longing desire defines the fourth line of the "Praise Prayer."  "I" - I invite the Holy Spirit to fill me today.  It's as though we "bid" the "Spirit" to come.

When you and I invite the Holy Spirit - everyday - to fill our lives, we are inviting the power of the Spirit to do 7 specific things that the Bible promises the "Spirit" will do for us.

Promise #1
:  The Spirit of God will admonish us.  "And when he (the Spirit) is come, he will reprove the world of sin" (John 16: 8, K.J.V.).

Promise #2:
The Spirit of God will comfort us.  "And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever" (John 14: 16, K.J.V.).

Promise #3
: The Spirit of God will teach us. "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you" (John 14: 26, K.J.V.).

Promise #4
: The Spirit of God will guide you. "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth" (John 16: 13, K.J.V.).

Promise #5:
The Spirit of God will help you.  "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered" (Romans 8: 26, K.J.V.).

Promise #6:
The Spirit of God will liberate you.  "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (II Corinthians 3: 17, K.J.V.).

Promise #7:
The Spirit of God will unify His children.  "Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling" (Ephesians 4: 3, 4, K.J.V.).

If we look again at our text for today, John 14: 16, we find that these words were spoken by Jesus on the evening before He died as He was having Passover supper with His closest friends.  Knowing He would soon be leaving these dear ones and understanding, better than they did themselves, how weak and faltering their faith was, Jesus revealed that He was leaving His precious children with a comforter or as the Greek calls it, "a consoler" or one who has been "called alongside."  This concept took on a whole new meaning when I was learning to walk again.  My strong physical therapist would walk along beside me with his hand gripped tightly on the safety belt around my waist.  It was impossible for me to fall down because at the least little sign of weariness or stumbling on my part, the therapist grabbed me and held me up.

This is the gift you and I have been left by our Heavenly Father.  The gift of the Holy Spirit whom we are promised will "come alongside" and admonish, comfort, teach, guide, help, liberate and unify us.  No wonder Jesus said to His disciples, "I will not leave you comfortless" (John 14: 18, K.J.V.).

Don't you want the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life?  I know I do.  And this is why I choose to invite the Holy Spirit into my life every day.

"I"- I invite the Holy Spirit to fill me today.

"Be filled with the Spirit."
Ephesians 5: 18
King James Version

"Ephesians 5: 18 is not just an experience to be enjoyed but a command to be obeyed.  If we do not open ourselves to a daily encounter with the Holy Spirit, then the inevitable conclusion is that we are disobedient Christians."
Dwight L. Moody

"Spirit of God,

Lord and Giver of Life,

moving between us and around,

like wind or water or fire;

breathe into us your freshness that we may awake;

cleanse our vision that we may see more clearly;

kindle our senses that we may feel more sharply;

and give us the courage to live

as you would have us live,

through Jesus Christ our Lord."
John V. Taylor

"Come down, O Love divine,
Seek thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with thine own ardour glowing;
Comforter, draw near,
Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.
Let it freely burn,
Till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes, in its heat consuming;
And let thy glorious light
Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming."
Bianco da Siena
