As a woman who loves my gender, there are certain things we sometimes do that break my heart. I was reminded of this several weeks ago, when I happened upon a recent episode of MTV cult hit, Jersey Shore.
This particular show involved 4 girls who were over at the Jersey Shore castmates house to meet up with several of the guys on the show. As the men in the house were deciding who would hook up with what girl, the women waited in the bedrooms, checking the mirror and making small talk with each other. Eventually, the guys entered the rooms, having made their selection. Without hesitation, the waiting women slipped into the covers with their male partners, with the assumption of sex given as the only reasonable conclusion as what would happen next.
Watching the scene unfold before me, I wanted to jump out of my skin. Tears began to form in my eyes as I thought about how a young woman would get to the point where she would de-value her body -- herself -- so much that she would wait for a guy to pick her to have sex with...as if she was a cheaply stuffed prize at the watergun game at the state fair. The thought nauseated me.
I am not naïve to the acceptance of casual sex in today's society. I know it happens, all the time. I don't ignore the desires within all of us to let our bodies act in the way God created them for marriage. But here's the reality: in our society, sex has been cheapened, overused and abused. And because of it, beautiful women have paid a high price.
Scripture reminds us of the risk of compromising our bodies, sexually. I Cor. 6: 18 says, "No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does." Popular culture may tell us to give ourselves over to the desires of our flesh or allow ourselves to become pawns for the sexual pleasure of another...but God tells us the truth.
Dear girlfriends, our bodies were meant for more.
God's desire is to use us in a way that we won't feel cheapened. His plan in our creation was not one of physical compromise or the pain that undoubtedly, eventually accompanies it. Instead, it was for joy. True love. The feeling of being valued. And yes...great, pure, lasting pleasure.
There is nothing casual about sex. It is the most beautiful of all physical gifts. God intended for it to be monumentally sacred, no matter what we water it down to be.
Regardless of how you've allowed your body to be treated in the past, your Heavenly Father wants you to know how special and valuable you are to Him, today. You are not an object, a pawn or a discarded toy. You are a beautiful woman with an equal opportunity for someone to see you as the prized possession you are. The truth is, Someone already does.
May you believe today that your body was meant for more. May you allow yourself only to be chosen by God. And may you walk with a renewed sense of truth about the intention of sex...the creation of you...and the beauty of a pure heart.
