from the Life Application Bible
Luke 16:8-9

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” (niv) The commendation received by the dishonest manager raises questions. Why would dishonesty be commended? This is the best example of Jesus twisting a story so as to make a point. No master in history has ever commended the shrewdness of a crook. Instead, the master throws the crook in jail. The manager had cut down the debts, legally made them binding with a third party, and indebted others to him. Thus, there was nothing left for the master to do than to commend the manager for his shrewdness. He had solved his problem—albeit at further expense to his master. The commendation seems odd, unless the master was simply appreciating the farsightedness of the plan.

Actually, Jesus did not want his listeners to focus on the details as much as on the lesson to be learned, which he includes here: For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. “People of the world” refers to unbelievers, who are committed neither to God nor to his eternal standards. “People of the light” refers to the disciples and followers of Jesus. The shrewd manager sized up his situation, made some decisions, came up with a strategy, and did what was needed. Jesus was not commending dishonesty, but rather the manager’s foresight and diligence to follow through and make friends. The manager did not profit directly in reducing the debts, but he used the principle of reciprocity to gain favor with the debtors. By doing a favor for them, the manager could require a favor from them. The debtors would be indebted to the manager.

Then Jesus added, “I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” Believers are to make wise use of their financial opportunities, not to earn heaven, but to use their resources to make friends by helping the poor. Literally, “they will welcome you” refers to the poor who have been helped. Their welcome will be the believers’ reward in heaven. If believers use their money to help those in need or to help others find Christ, their earthly investment will bring eternal benefit. Those who obey God will find that the unselfish use of their possessions will follow. Soon Jesus would spell out some of the applications for gaining friends (16:10-13).

We have been entrusted with our 'employer's' goods. When we are generous with those goods it makes our boss look good. And it insures our future well-being.

"11You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
12This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else." (2 Cor. 9:11-13)

"17Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age..." (1 Tim. 6:17-19)

use worldly wealth as opposed to "hord worldly wealth" or be selfish with your worldly wealth, or "arrogantly flaunt your worldly wealth" or "tempt others with your worldly wealth"

In other words invest in your community. Don't bury your talents in the ground or under a mattress.

The Essene community considered themselve "sons of light", they would spend money only amongst themselves. All those outside of their community were not worthy of their money. This was a rebuke on them by the Master. Bluethread and Collie hits somethings right on. Don't cut yourself off from the community and be a wise steward of your resources.

“Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him..”
(Matthew.5:25)
“And when the disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But He turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men´s lives, but to save them.”
