Hi. This question came to mind, as I viewed the NBC nightly news on Sunday July 27, and the reporter described the church shooting in Tennessee, as something one would not expect to occur in that setting. While "the faith" seeks to be inclusive and welcoming, is installing cameras or some sort of detection device becoming the order of the day to provide some semblance of security in public places? These are found in other public venues, how about houses of worship? My gut says, it won't happen here, and it hasn't in the 50+ years my house of worship has existed. In fact, my town has only had 3 murders in the past 6 decades. To be sure other sins run rampant though. How do you side on this issue?

The Enemy is on the move. The question is, how will the we react? Will we be like the people who hid under the pews or ran? Or will we be like the man who stepped in front of the shotgun tp protect his fellow believers, or the man who tackled the gunman?

Our church has a small army of security staff ("plain clothes", uniformed.....as well as some "off duty" police officers in uniform)....who are there "as needed", when any kind of substantial gathering occurs. (church services on weekends, wednesday evening bible studies/services, etc...etc.....) our church, of course, is "not the norm".....approximately 15,000-20,000 people come to our church on any given weekend. (saturday and sunday services).....having that many people in one place, sooner or later out of that many people, you will have "incidents". We haven't had any shootings.....but, there have been many "minor" incidents that were resolved very quickly because we do have the security there. (especially in and around the children's ministry area).....If there is ONE incident that comes up more often than any, it's adults attempting to "pick up children" that they are not supposed to (parents with no custodial rights).... And, we've had the occassional potential suicide attempts....as people are somehow drawn to the church because of it's "high-profile" presence in the community.....and, are somehow 'seeking help'.... And, security cameras? You probably can't walk in many places without being watched....since the church is over 800,000 sq. ft., for many people, it is reassuring that someone is keeping an eye out. There was the Wedgwood Baptist Church shootings 10 years ago right here in DFW (Iam sure after that incident, our church re-examined it's security procedures) it's something you really cannot prevent, unfortunately. we certainly do not want "airport style" security lines (with metal detectors) at the front doors....
