Has anyone ready any interesting books lately that you'd recommend? I'm going on vacation and I'd reading is what I do at night to relax. We'll be gone for almost 3 weeks and it would be a perfect time for me to catch up on reading...no Internet, no day to day responsibilities...just me and my daughter in the wilderness of BC (well, we'll be staying in hotels some days and camping out during some days).

List a few of your favorite books or genres and I can give better information.

I enjoyed Honeymoon in Purdah recently. It's about a Canadian woman who travels to Iran with a friend. Non-fiction. Very compassionate and interesting.

Another thing you can do is check out the Book Review threads and get a feel for something that interests you.

Well, let's see. THe last few books that I read was:

Fall of the Phantom Lord, a story about Dan Osman, a rock climber
Into the Wild, about Chris McCandless, a man who disappeared in Alaskan wilderness,
Into thin Air, about the 1996 everest disaster
Touching the Void, about Joe Simpson's battle for survival in the Andes

Christian books? I like Blue like Jazz. I read all the "Case" series by Lee Strobel. I read one by Bart Ehrman who is an Agnostic. I'd like to read more of the CS Lewis books. I'd probably pick up Mere CHristianity at the library before we leave. I read most of John Eldredge's book and love them. I'd like to read the Shack too, so I'm sure I'll get that

So, anything in those areas would be a good suggestion. I thoroughly enjoy a good adventure book as long as it's based on the true event.

Honeymoon in Purdah is true but it's probably more travelogue then adventure (although anyone from the west traveling in Iran has to be a bit adventurous, especially if they're doing it under false pretenses).

A biography of the life of Sir Richard Burton is fascinating. He explored much of the world (including India, Arabia, Africa, South America) during the Victorian era and knew hundreds of languages and dialects. He passed an Arab and entered Mecca when it was death for non-Moslem's to enter. He sought out the source of the Nile. Really adventurous. A Rage to Live is one of them I remember.

Kon-Tiki
by Thor Heyerdahl is a good one. When he was on his honeymoon in Polynesia he noticed some similarities with South American culture so he suggested the South Pacific was settled from there. Basically he was laughed at so he and 5 acquaintances built a raft of balsam wood using only materials available at the time period and they sailed west across the Pacific. I'm in the middle of it right now and it's fairly exciting. He also wrote Green Was the Earth on the Seventh Day about his honeymoon year on a Polynesian island. He and his wife built their house, gathered and caught their food, and made friends with the native people.

A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins is similar to Into the Wild (except '70s, author wrote the book, he became a Christian during his travels). He basically gets tired of material culture and decides to walk across the country after college.

I have 2 more books sitting on my To Read piles that fit in also. On the Wing by Alan Tennant (environmentalist and a crusty old pilot follow a peregrine falcon on it's migration from Texas, north, and then south again into South America. And Off the Map: Bicycling Across Siberia by Mark Jenkins.

Also good was The Forest People by Colin Turnbull. It's about his year living with the Pygmies of Central Africa in the 1950s. Really interesting but probably more anthropological then you're looking for.

I hope something here works for you.

I love Boundaries and Safe People by Cloud and Townsend.

Also the Pursuit of God by AW Tozer.
